Publisher's Summary

When Roger Bigod, heir to the powerful earldom of Norfolk, arrives at court in 1177 to settle a bitter inheritance dispute with his half-brothers, he encounters Ida de Tosney, young mistress to King Henry II.

A victim of Henry's seduction and the mother of his son, Ida is attracted to Roger and sees in him a chance of lasting security; but in deciding to marry Roger, she is forced to make a choice. As Roger's importance as a mainstay of the Angevin government grows, it puts an increasing strain on his marriage.

Against a volatile political background the gulf between them threatens to widen beyond crossing, especially when so many bridges have already been burned.

"Great performance of an interesting story."
Where does The Time of Singing rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It ranks high. Peter Wickham's performance was very engaging, and Elizabeth Chadwick provided an great story of characters that were vital to late 12th century British history but are often not explored.

What other book might you compare The Time of Singing to and why?

"Time and Chance" by Sharon Kay Penman. It covers a similar time period in British history, but focuses on the perspectives of a different set of characters.

What about Peter Wickham’s performance did you like?

His performance was lively and engaging, keeping one's interest throughout the reading.
