Publisher's Summary

Part of the west coast is recovering from a series of devastating earthquakes. This caused a record drop in the stock market, and due to a national debt of 20 trillion dollars, the value of the dollar is on the edge of collapsing.

At the same time, riots are starting to break out across the country which could lead to a new civil war.

Our enemies see our weakness and know it is time for them to take their places as world leaders. However, they have to find a way to neutralize the American military. Two countries think they have come up with a way and have set everything into motion to do just that.

Vince and Kim Johnson live on a farm 40 miles to the southeast of Kansas City, Missouri. After serving 17 years in the Army, due to an injury, Vince had to take a medical retirement. Now, all he thinks he has to fight is "cabin fever". Little does he know that a chain of events is about to take place that will test all his training and skills.

He must also face his own inner battles. He will do whatever it takes to protect his family and friends, but he knows he may face judgment for his decisions.

He must also find the proper balance of handling two kinds of love from two different women, and not let temptation take him over.

Both must band together with family, inexperienced friends, and four of the men Vince served with years earlier to prepare for and try to survive a time unlike any in our history.

    Story
    "An Interesting look ahead"
If you could sum up The Tears of Ephraim in three words, what would they be?

    Haunting, gritty, down to earth

What other book might you compare The Tears of Ephraim to and why?

This is the first of this genre that I have read, so I don't have any similar books to compare it to. However I will be looking for book two when it's available.

Which character – as performed by Ben Clark – was your favorite?

The main character, Vince. Ben narrated the book in a very realistic manner that made me feel I was listening to someone sharing their thoughts, rather than just reading from the printed page.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, even though it wasn't possible to listen in one sitting due to the length of the book, I listened for longer periods of time than I would normally because the story was interesting and narrated in a down to earth way by Ben Clark.

    Any additional comments?

The story and narration were a good match and came across very effectively. Well done!

    "Outstanding and realistic"

I am a bit of a Prepper myself and the story gave me some ideas that I have never thought of. Outstanding story and can't wait for book two to be released. The conversations among the characters are realistic. The story is touching, romantic, and even scary at times and goes along with what's been on the news the last couple of years. The book is a great listen.

    Story
    "Great entry into the series."

Several earthquakes on the West Coast caused stress and volatility in the population and the stock market. With the U.S. debt reaching twenty trillion and the U.S. dollar on shaky ground, the U.S. couldn’t stand much more stress. Our enemies saw this as an opportunity. Iran and Russia developed a plan to take advantage of the situation, which unfortunately worked like a charm. Thus begins the tribulation with an attack on Washington and a massive EMP. The focus of the story is on the Johnson family, Vince and Kim who live outside of Kansas City, Missouri. In an opportune exchange Vince is contacted by one of his old war buddies. His old friend and the other three buddies are invited to Vince’s farm for the duration. The story continues with the Johnson crew consolidating supplies, acquiring whatever additional supplies and ammunition they could find, and fortifying the homestead. One of Vince’s sons is a deputy sheriff who is home with Vince, the second son is on the other side of the coin escaping from prison due to an airplane crash into its midst. Additional stories of survival appear throughout and there are a few sub plots which add to the tension or compassion. This is a great entry into the series; with wonderful characters, excellent writing and a fine narrator. I look forward to more from this author and this series.

    "Not my cup of tea."
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

As far as a good listed, the book would have had to have been written differently I guess. In an intense situation, people would say, "come on we've got get out of here" Not, come on we have got to get out of here. That was a constant frustration for the for most of the book.

Has The Tears of Ephraim turned you off from other books in this genre?

    NO

Would you listen to another book narrated by Ben Clark?

    Yes

    Any additional comments?

The book took a cheep turn for me when 3 of the characters develop an emotional threesome. A friend confesses to having sexual thoughts and a deep love for her husband. The husband confesses to having the same thoughts for his wife's friend. The wife , bless her heart, totally understands and is so happy they are all willing to acknowledge the facts. . Wife has no worries that the two confessed emotional lovers will never go to far. Really, I decided I wasn't interested in the development of this scenario. I am returning the book. I'm not a prude, This was so out of place in the story as to make it a needless distraction.
