Publisher's summary

Twas the night (okay, more like the week) before Christmas, and all through Pine Cove, California, people are busy buying, wrapping, packing, and generally getting into the holiday spirit.

But not everybody is feeling the joy. Little Joshua Barker is in desperate need of a holiday miracle. No, he's not on his deathbed. But Josh is sure that he saw Santa take a shovel to the head, and now the 7-year-old has only one prayer: Please, Santa, come back from the dead.

But hold on! There's an angel waiting in the wings. (Wings, get it?) It's none other than the Archangel Raziel come to Earth seeking a small child with a wish that needs granting. Unfortunately, our angel's not sporting the brightest halo in the bunch, and before you can say "Kris Kringle" he's botched his sacred mission and sent the residents of Pine Cove headlong into Christmas chaos, culminating in the most hilarious and horrifying holiday party the town has ever seen.

Only Christopher Moore, the man who brought you the outrageous lost gospel Lamb and the hysterical fish tale Fluke, could have devised a new holiday classic that tugs at the heartstrings and serves up a healthy slice of fruitcake to boot.

"This little slice of perverse Christmas cheer is enough to make even the most cynical Scrooge guffaw." (Publishers Weekly)

Outrageously fun!

What a hoot! I enjoyed every minute of this story. I wish I could go to the Slug right now and chug a few with the girls. Loved the zombies--what a festive touch.

Enjoyable

Enjoyable adult christmas tale that is different. Very odd tale with a bat, zombie and an angle that is as dumb as a rock, that you keep listening just to see what else happens. Enjoyed listening to the story very much.

Not for the humor challenged

You take the story as you find it; much as one would a particularly fine meal served at the bar of "The Head of the Slug Tavern". I find Moore's crass, earthy humor refreshingly unpretentious, much like Chaucer's works--it's humor for the unjaded reader.

one of the funniest ever

Oh my god! This is laugh-out-loud hilarious. One of the funniest audiobooks I've heard, even better than The Daily Show's America book. This is an Adult-Oriented story aimed at people with sarcastic sense of humors. I haven't laughed this much since I heard Christopher Buckley's 'Thank you for smoking'. I found the story easy to follow and the characters just like regular people, flawed but mostly good-intentioned (except the evil developer, of course). Tony Roberts did a great job with the voices and his sense of timing was perfect. You can't help but laugh. Unless I guess, you are an evil developer, too.

Shades of Xena!!

Expected a pretty entertaining listen - not a sneezing-snorting giggling laugh out loud experience. I had a cold while listening to this, so let me tell you that the sneezing was especially painful. I don't really know what to say about the flow, the narration and the characters - they just seemed so natural, not forced. I hope that audible gets more of his books. I have read some of the author's other books (Bloodsucking Fiends, Fluke) and each has been completely different. Can't wait until they are in an audio version!
I do have to agree with the reviewer who wondered how long it took for the listener who decided it was a great road trip story for the kids to realize that a mistake had been made. Definately an adult tale. Not necessarily due to the language or sexual references (heard any rap lately??) but because the context needs to be understood to be appreciated ie barbarian warrior princesses, barking bats, and - most importantly - relationships.

Loved it

This made me laugh out loud several times. I know that it was partly because of the narrator's ability to nail down Moore's style and humor, but also because the story is just plain funny. Definitely a favorite.

Superb in all ways

Loved the book from start to finish. Quirky and silly in the right spots.

Christopher Moore is the best!!

Spoiler alert!

I LOVE Christopher Moore books because they are hilarious, clever, and always surprising!! For example, reading The Stupidest Angel, it’s supposedly a Christmas story, but suddenly zombies! That’s the beauty of Christopher Moore! You really just never know, and it’s always enjoyable and hilarious!
