    "Vivid, slow and tender."

This first got under my skin years ago and I want balance the other rather misleading review. (In my opinion at least) William Trevor is a great writer, he is vivid and yet spare, touching but not sentimental and I have loved a few of his novels. Fools of Fortune, Love and Summer, and this one all stayed with me long after I read them. It is a delight to have The Story of Lucy Gault read aloud while I go about my day...
