    Story
    "Quick and Easy holiday read"

I chose this book as a quick and easy, brain dead holiday read and it served its purpose.
It tells the story of Joanna and Dean, two very different people from very different families meeting on a transatlantic flight. In the time it takes to fly from London to Chicago these two strangers change the direction of each other’s lives.

Joanna, a thirty something hopeless romantic, thinks life is passing her by. She is set to sabotage the wedding of her ex-fiancé that she believes she wrongly jilted a few years earlier and wants to get together again. Despite Dean's best efforts to remain a stranger, Joanna confides in Dean but his initial disinterest is fuelled by his own issues stemming from his tragic early life and propensity to treat women as disposable.

The story is told from the perspective of both Joanna and Dean, as well as skipping back decades to look at their parents' stories and the way their very different upbringings have shaped their personalities. The story is slow to take off and even when it does, it doesn't reach any dizzy heights. I haven't read any other books by Adele Parks and, based on this book, I am not sure I ever will.

    Story
    "Ok"

Loved big parts of it, specially from when they get on plane. Not my fave type of twists. Narrator ok but pretty poor in parts - would like to hear Adele's fab books done justice instead of very halting delivery, often with weird splitting up if sentences- annoying. Ould listen to more from adele herself tho . Lovely lady x

    Story
    "Disappointing and tedious"

For some reason I thought the title of this book was intriguing. I'm afraid that's the only good thing I found about it. Jo has to be one of the most irritating characters I have ever read. She's supposed to be an optimist but all she seems to do is moan and act like an idiot.

The book was overlong and as for the ending? Hmmm.

What did you like most about The State We're In?

I liked the narrator, she made the different characters come alive quite well.

What did you like best about this story?

The first half was very slow but if you stick with it it does get better.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Add a bit more emotion to the characters so you can really buy into them.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    The ending made me sad.

    Any additional comments?

Dont give up on this book because it starts slow. Its worth it in the end.
