What are the odds that the stranger sitting next to you on a plane is destined to change your life? Especially when they appear to be your opposite in every way. She's a lifelong optimist; he's a resolute cynic. In the time it takes to fly from London to Chicago, each finds something in the other that they didn't even realise they needed. "Wonderfully plotted, moving and insightful...this is Parks’ best yet…shot through with funny, tender and observant moments." (Daily Mail)
"She is a particularly acute observer of relationship ups and downs, and her stories are always as insightful as they are entertaining." (Daily Mirror)

"Slow slow slow"
Very slow book. Might be better as actual book as you can skip the laboured descriptive passages. Could have been quite a decent story if it had skipped along quickly.
"Too Slow Paced for an Audiobook"
The State We're In was too slow paced for an audiobook. I may try it or another Adele Parks' book on my Kindle. As an explanation, I prefer the story of my audiobooks to be more engaging and fast paced. Usually, I am doing something else while I listen - driving, cleaning, etc.. If an audiobook is slow paced, my mind wanders and then I miss sections and have to rewind. This does not happen when I am reading a novel since reading obviously requires my full attention.
Very easy going plot with a few added extras but not too dramatic.
The ending I found predictable but still enjoyed the story
Each chapter began with a characters name so you knew from whose perspective the story was coming from.
Possibly could be turned into a TV film like the Americans use to in the early 90's
Just a real easy going story
Not really,to be fair this is not my usual genre. I went off on a whim and chose this as it was an audible recommended read. I do not recommend it particularly. I didn't really care for most of the characters, it was very cliched towards the end, and made a lot of the classic mistakes you are always told not to do when story-writing. Also, the style of narration was a bit annoying. Short sentences and that annoying inflection at the end of each sentence, like it was a question! Particularly with Joanna's character.
The book Thief or Jeanette Wintersons "Why be happy when you can be normal"
"Chick lit with a twist!!"
Really interesting story of how one bad person can detrimentally effect the lives of so many.
slow to start but thought it was a great story and funny in parts good
I loved the characters. It was hopeful and had a feel good factor. Also had some unexpected twists & turns.
"Quick and Easy holiday read"
I chose this book as a quick and easy, brain dead holiday read and it served its purpose.
It tells the story of Joanna and Dean, two very different people from very different families meeting on a transatlantic flight. In the time it takes to fly from London to Chicago these two strangers change the direction of each other’s lives.
Joanna, a thirty something hopeless romantic, thinks life is passing her by. She is set to sabotage the wedding of her ex-fiancé that she believes she wrongly jilted a few years earlier and wants to get together again. Despite Dean's best efforts to remain a stranger, Joanna confides in Dean but his initial disinterest is fuelled by his own issues stemming from his tragic early life and propensity to treat women as disposable.
The story is told from the perspective of both Joanna and Dean, as well as skipping back decades to look at their parents' stories and the way their very different upbringings have shaped their personalities. The story is slow to take off and even when it does, it doesn't reach any dizzy heights. I haven't read any other books by Adele Parks and, based on this book, I am not sure I ever will.
Really loved it. A great mix of characters and a lovely story. get some tissues ready, though!
Good narrator, lovely easy listen. Sad ending. I liked both Jo and Dean and wanted so much for them to be happy!
