Publisher's Summary

In Wilbur Smith's The Sound of Thunder, the year is 1899. The British Empire is at the height of its power. But in South Africa, proud Dutch colonists defy the Queen and her army - and a lush, wild world is torn apart by guns, spears, and swords. Sean Courtney had been tragically separated from his family, but the Boer War has brought him back to his homeland - and into the sights of his enemy’s guns. It has also returned him to Ruth Friedman, the only woman Sean can love, even though he shouldn’t. As Sean’s loyalties - to nation, man, and blood - are tested, a saga of duty and betrayal unfolds....

"favorite Wilbur Smith book to date"

Action packed due to the Boer War storyline. Thought there was solid character development and enjoyed the narrator.

    "hard to follow"

I have read a number of books by this aurthor and usually like them. This one was hard to follow and I lost interest and could not finish finish it.. i kept waiting for it to engage me in a way that i was interested in what happened, but that never happened. My advice is save your credit.

    "Sad"
Would you try another book from Wilbur Smith and/or John Lee?

if it was different I may try another Book 2 was the same story as one no difference

What could Wilbur Smith have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Mad a different story or continued the story

Would you be willing to try another one of John Lee’s performances?

    He was fair

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Sad cuz same story as #1 I spent money to hear the same story

    Any additional comments?

    Don't buy #2 if you buy #1

    "Very enjoyable!"

Very good book and very well read. Being a South African, I know the different accents can be difficult to do but the reader did a great job, giving life to each character!

    Any additional comments?

I got a bit lost in the middle, or rather bored with all the fighting and such and never really connected with Ruth, his 'lost but found lover'. The bitter feud between Sean and Garrith came together at the end, but it still lacked the emotion I felt in the first book. John Lee was wonderful, yet it seemed he was a bit more rushed - maybe too much coffee beforehand ? I would probably listen to a 'third' part of this series if it becomes available.

    "More from the master..."
What made the experience of listening to The Sound of Thunder the most enjoyable?

The entire story. When my wife and I arrived in South Africa, some 30 years ago, the local inhabitants all suggested we read Wilbur Smith, for an understanding of the country, culture, and history. We devoured the Sean Courtney trilogy, and continued to enjoy the adventures of the entire Courtney clan. Highly recommended.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Sound of Thunder?

Too many to choose just one.

What about John Lee’s performance did you like?

John does a fine job, although there are a few spots where I question his accent. Not serious enough to be off-putting, and probably not very noticeable for anyone that hasn't actually lived in the country.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    The Courtney saga continues...

    Any additional comments?

Trust me - I've yet to recommend Wilbur Smith to anyone that hasn't thoroughly enjoyed his writing (and impeccable research). Please can we have some more Courtney family based novels, unabridged. A Sparrow Falls will complete the first trilogy, and I'm waiting patiently.
