Publisher's summary

On the heels of the international best seller Only Time Will Tell, Jeffrey Archer picks up the sweeping story of the Clifton Chronicles….

Only days before Britain declares war on Germany, Harry Clifton, hoping to escape the consequences of long-buried family secrets, and forced to accept that his desire to marry Emma Barrington will never be fulfilled, has joined the Merchant Navy. But his ship is sunk in the Atlantic by a German Uboat, drowning almost the entire crew. An American cruise liner, the SS Kansas Star, rescues a handful of sailors, among them Harry and the third officer, an American named Tom Bradshaw. When Bradshaw dies in the night, Harry seizes on the chance to escape his tangled past and assumes his identity.

But on landing in America, he quickly learns the mistake he has made, when he discovers what is awaiting Bradshaw in New York. Without any way of proving his true identity, Harry Clifton is now chained to a past that could be far worse than the one he had hoped to escape.

Even my husband liked it

Kind of a chick-lit book set in England during the 1930s and 40s. My mom was a poor war bride so I loved hearing about how life must have been for her. Got the book for a long drive and thought my husband would just endure it. He loved it and couldn't wait to find out about the next twist of the story! I'm an ol' Jeffrey Archer fan, so I feel I can't go wrong w any of his books!

Better than Book 1

Same engaging characters...less repetition, ready for Book 3! Great series for a long drive - strong performances.

Excellent story

I’m a huge fan of Jeffrey Archer - and this book did not disappoint - I’m just sorry that I started with this book only to learn that it is the second in the series - I will complete the series then return to Book One

Good for the second of three books

No its not as good as the first book but for the second of of three books not bad at all a bit much on some things seems to be more about fixing the story lines for the big finish in the third book than moving the story truly forward that said well worth the listen.
