Publisher's summary

The Silver Pigs is the classic novel that introduced people around the world to Marcus Didius Falco, a private informer with a knack for trouble, a tendency for bad luck, and a frequently inconvenient drive for justice.

When Marcus Didius Falco encounters the young and very pretty Sosia Camillina in the Forum, he senses immediately that there is something amiss. When she confesses that she is fleeing for her life, Falco offers to help her and, in doing so, gets himself mixed up in a deadly plot involving stolen ingots, dangerous and dark political machinations, and, most hazardous of all, one Helena Justina - a brash, indomitable senator's daughter connected to the very traitors that Falco has sworn to expose.

Completely brillant

My favorite out of 400+ audio tapes. The narrator and the text are brilliant together. The narrators pace rolls along as if it is second nature to have each word and thought totally appropriate tho the moment. It doesn't get better than this for subtle, humorous, vivid depiction of historical fiction.

Didn't do it for me

I found that the attempt to shoehorn Raymond Chandler style hardboiled detective fiction into ancient Rome was contrived and forced and generally annoying. (Also, it kept reminding me of the old Wayne and Shuster bit "Rinse the Blood off My Toga," which was the same basic idea, but INTENDED to be comedy.) I know it's a popular series, and on the plus side it does seem to have quite a lot of offhand references to actual Roman history, which is interesting-ish, I guess, but it didn't float my particular boat. Others may (and obviously do) feel differently.

Excellent Narrator, Good Story

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The story was entertaining, if not complex.

Have you listened to any of Christian Rodska’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Excellent narrator, he brought Falco to vivid life.

Was The Silver Pigs worth the listening time?

I listen to books during my commute. This was a good choice as I could easily pick up the story if I zoned out for a few minutes, and I was able to keep track of the characters by ear with no problem.

Fun way to learn political and cultural history

Silver Pigs is only the beginning. Falco has a rough exterior but a soft heart.

A book in Roman Empire narrated with a British accent

It took me half the book to stop getting stuck on the apparent anomaly between the setting and time of the book and the British accent. Once I stopped it was a good tale.

Really great!

Engaging protagonist who is also our narrator. I can't wait to read the next one!

Narrator Just Not My Cup of Tea

I am sorry to say that the narrators voice grated on my nerves.
I have fortunately read all of the books of this series previously.
I jumped to the end just so I wouldn't have to listen to the rest.

Hardly a Mystery, and Barely Roman

There's not much mystery in this historical mystery, and not much history either. The novel wears the patina of first-century Rome, but underneath it is 20th-century Britain. The political intrigue held promise but came to nothing in the end. The murder happens early on, but then I forgot all about it until the end when our hero indignantly demands, "But what about So-and-So?!" Oh, right. Forgot about that part. The novel is much more of a romance than anything else, and a strictly formulaic one at that. Since I'm not a fan of formulaic romance, I found it tedious and wished the author had just left it out. Christian Rodska would have done an admirable job if the novel had been set in 20th-century London, but his narration felt completely out of place for the intended setting. Still, a lot of people seem to have enjoyed the book, and while I didn't, you might.

Very Enjoyable

It's like Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels meets the Roman Empire. I really enjoyed listening to this book.

Great Story

I love a happy ending! I actually had problems with the voice of the reader. I expected something a bit more refined. But he managed all the characterizations and made it work.
