Publisher's summary

Before Doctor Sleep, there was The Shining, a classic of modern American horror from the undisputed master, Stephen King.

Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

I expected more

Just as a note: I have not seen the film. I've read only two Stephen King books and some of the short stories. I all loved them but this book seemed to be a little boring with not much happening. The narraror does a great job.

I wish I could give more stars.

Loved this story. First Stephen King book I read that really messed with me. Not because of out right scares or shock value it was more because through out the story you saw someone you were cheering on plummet into complete insanity. Stephen King did a great job writing about the intense feeling of anger and rage. The narrator did an amazing job and its definitely an audio book I'll be listening to more than once.

way different from the movie

I appreciate that all the paranormal activity that
goes on could not be captured in the movie but there was definitely a divergence from the movie.

Another King Classic Under My Belt

I knew little about the Shining apart from the controversies surrounding the film and miniseries. I loved the novel, finding it interesting and a definite stepping stone in King's style.
My only trouble work this audiobook was the narrator. I don't mind the performance, it didn't stop me from loving the book, but I found most of his characters lacked life and personality, particularly the minor characters whom I found I had occasional struggles to tell apart.
All that being said, I highly recommend this title.

Loved it!!!

This is my first time reading (listening) to a Stephen King novel. I enjoyed every second of it. I am already a fan of both the theatrical release of The Shining and the TV version as well, but nothing compares to the book as I have now found out. Wish they would stick closer to this version in the movie!

I forgot how good this book is.

I decided to revisit this book after listening to Dr. Sleep; it's fantastic. I completely forgot what a gem it is. The narrator is very good as well. I highly recommend it.
