"A beautifully detailed family saga that shifts effortlessly back and forth in time.¿" (Publishers Weekley)
"Pilcher's characters are well-drawn, real, and engrossing people. A thoroughly charming book...." (Library Journal)
"A beautifully detailed family saga that shifts effortlessly back and forth in time.…" Indeed!!!
A wonderful story. Nice occasions and sad ones as well. It made me laugh and it made me cry. A good description of all characters.
Superbly written and beautifully narrated. Brilliant story.
Ms Pilcher portrays the human character and its many nuances in such loving detail - she's a superlative storyteller with a profound understanding of how people tick.
Usually I'm not fond of a writing style that jumps from person to person and/or different times/eras, but this book is a perfect illustration of how this can be done without detracting from the story.
This is a gentle tale, enormously readable, positive and heart-warming. It ranks in my top 5 books and I'd give it 10 stars if that was possible!
Very good read
I loved the tranquility and the absence of drama.
Hannah Gordon was truly amazing. She kept the mood of the story throughout. Excellent performance.
Nice story. Long. Just loved it.
I downloaded this because I enjoyed Winter Solstice by the same author. This book however was written much earlier in her career and was originally a series in a woman's magazine (Not always a bad thing, apparently DUNE was originally published in serial form). Hence there is a lack of the whole thing hanging together well, also there is too much stereotypic female thinking, which put this male reader off. The open acceptance of immorality with a failure for people to accept the consequences of their own choices and the effect that has on others is disturbing. This was also present a little in Winter's Solstice but the rest was so good it didn't detract. For men interested in learning the type of books and way of thinking that many women of middle age love, it is instructive. But even for that purpose I couldn't stick with it. The Narrator was good.
"Beautifully written & so enoyable"
Timeless story, atmospheric and heart wrenching. Full
of wonderful descriptive text.
I read this book about 15 years ago and loved it then
but it?s even better as an audio book.
"In essence it's a lovely story."
A gentle, rambling story that goes on and on! There's always something to hold your interest and in essence it's a lovely story. It's nicely read too by Hannah Gordon.
"Classic English Country Life"
This book is an amazing and wonderfully written story, the characters are so real and Rosamunde Pilcher never fails with her small details, perfect listening for a rainy Sunday. Buy it!!
This has been my longest audiobook so far. Though I was afraid I wouldn't enjoy it being over 25 hours long, I actually listened to it twice I liked it so much. I shall miss Penelope's wisdom and Hannah Gordon's voice. It is without doubt one of the most delightful books I have ever read/listened to.
Abosolutely delightful listen. Hannah Gordon brilliant as usual. If you just want to relax and chill this is the perfect book. Doesn't need huge concentration but most certainly isn't boring. The characters are absolutely charming and introduced at just the right pace. I loved it.
"Such a wonderful read"
This book started so gentle for me that I didn't think I would have rated it so highly as I have done from the first few chapters - I'm 41 years old and felt I should be reading it 10 years on BUT...as the book progressed and I got to know the characters and their life events I became gripped and looked forward to listening.
This is now a story I am sad to have finished. I cannot wait for a year or so to pass so I can enjoy listening to it again. I fell in love with Sophie and Penelope - such wonderful women.
"Excellent and easy listening"
Hannah Gordon is the perfect choice of voice. Very easy on the ear. An enthralling story too. Top marks.
I have read the paperback twice but it was lovely to listen to the story this time. Such lovely characters.
"Wonderfully observant and a really lovely read"
I don't remember why I chose this book but I am so glad that I did. It was inspiring, thought provoking and the most memorable read I have had for a long time. It is a book that will stick with me for ever.
Hannah Gordons reading does it great justice.
I really loved this story, it has it all in there, you can draw a lot from it.
Well written and read lovely listen.
This author makes you easily get to know each character, and as their lives are all different yet bound together. What a joy to listen to
