For vibrant, lovely Jean Suttman, the fellowship to study in Rome was the culmination of her dreams, until she undertook an innocent expedition to the ancient Temple of Mithra. The prospects for the 1907 archaeological season in Egypt seem fairly dull to Amelia Peabody. Her adored husband, Professor Radcliff Emerson, has been ignominiously demoted to examining only the most boring tombs in the Valley of the Kings, but they are determined to make the most of a bad situation. This year, however, the legendary land of the pharaohs will yield more than priceless artifacts, for the desert guards even deeper mysteries that are wrapped in greed - and sealed in murder.

August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

Publisher's summary
For vibrant, lovely Jean Suttman, the fellowship to study in Rome was the culmination of all her dreams, until she undertook an innocent expedition to the ancient subterranean Temple of Mithra.
From the moment she stepped into the pagan darkness and discovered the corpse of the repulsive Albert, one of her fellow students, she was afraid. Not even the comforting presence of the perceptive and practical Jacqueline Kirby could erase the fear that was nourished by one small accident after another. "Accidents" that came dreadfully close to killing her.
Someone was stalking Jean, someone ruthless and determined. Before long she could see no chance of rescue from the ever-present terror...no hope of escape...nothing but death...

Story
When Anne's friend Kevin asks her to spend the summer at Grayhaven, his parents' new home in Pennsylvania, it seems like the ideal way to complete the book on contemporary literature they have been working on. And Grayhaven, an authentic medieval manor, proves to be nothing short of miraculous. But at the end of three weeks Anne realizes that she and Kevin have not added one new sentence to their book. What is it about this house that is so disturbing?

Story
The prospects for the 1907 archaeological season in Egypt seem fairly dull to Amelia Peabody. Her adored husband, Professor Radcliff Emerson, has been ignominiously demoted to examining only the most boring tombs in the Valley of the Kings, but they are determined to make the most of a bad situation. This year, however, the legendary land of the pharaohs will yield more than priceless artifacts, for the desert guards even deeper mysteries that are wrapped in greed - and sealed in murder.

just couldn't get into it
I made no connection with the characters. The point of the story eluded me.

Fun story, robotic narrator
Rollicking fun whodunnit! It would be much improved with a more skilled narrator. It's hard to tell the difference between the two main women characters, and the Irish accent of another doesn't quite work. Still, all in all, a fun listen.

Fun
A fun romp from Ms Peters with the usual dollop of history. I enjoyed it very much. I also enjoyed Grace Colin's narration. She does a fine Jacqueline Kirby. A nice little mystery with an ending I didn't guess as well.

Interesting story
I enjoyed this story and all the interesting information that it contained. Well developed characters and believable story and the background information truly fleshed out the whole.

Better than expected!
I loved the story and it definitely kept my attention.
I couldn’t warm to the narration, however. It wasn’t bad but there was this haughty tone that carried through each character and that put me off.

Very Enjoyable
Love Elizabeth Peters books (I have read most of them) and Grace Conlin was a good narrator.

Witty
This series follows the adventures of Jacqueline Kirby who is an eccentric, middle-aged librarian with a burgeoning penchant for romance and knack for criminal inquiry. Elizabeth Peters consistently produces publications containing dryly humorous and witty characters with one or two cornballs. Furthermore, her novels always contain a cornucopia of historical information making them enlightening as well as entertaining. The Jacqueline Kirby series adheres to this formula and is a fantastic way to kill a few hours at the gym or on a road trip.

Love these books but narrator isn’t good
She tries to do voices for all the characters which I generally prefer, but her accents are truly terrible. Seems weird to be a narrator if you can’t do even a British accent

Narrator sub par
Mispronunciations drive me mad. Monotonous. Not wonderful voices. On the other hand, the story and writing are lovely
Conlin is a mediocre voice artist. I have Naked Once More with Conlin and another version narrated by Barbara Rosenblat - Rosenblat is soooo superior. Would love hear this with Rosenblat
