    "Wonderful/Fantastic Listen"

First time listener of this author, and I can tell you it won't be the last! Elizabeth Chadwick is The best writer of medieval fiction I have read/listened to in a very long time.
Very well narrated. I will be looking for more of Elizabeth Chadwick's superb writing from audible. This is top quality.

    "Doesn't compare to "Greatest Knight""

What a disappointment. This had none of the story qualities of the first book. It was more like an attempt to tie together unrelated historical incidents and a European genealogy chart. Spent more time discussing the birth of children that played no role in the future story than any battles, strategies, etc. I could go on, but this book is a sad follow-up to "Greatest Knight"

    "Great Book"

As a follow on to the Greatest Knight these two books follow the non-fictional William Marshal offering a wonderful experience to the "reader" - Great "Read".

    "JUST GREAT !"

With well over 200 audiobooks in my listening past, this is only the 2nd time I've written a review. This was such a treat. Best off reading the proir William Marshall books before this one to appreciate the story to its fullest but still a wonderful, engrossing, and delightful book. Plenty of history to appreciate in a fictional story and now one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

"Love the history, lukewarm on the audiobook"

I read the previous book in this series, "The Greatest Knight," and gave it 4 stars. This one was a little more uneven, I thought, and I've given it 3 stars. William Marshall lived a long time and went through a lot. Maybe two books is too few to tell his life story because this book felt rushed, and the production team didn't help. A little pause between scene changes would be a nice improvement.

    "Disappointed"

I was disappointed in this book - both the story and the narration. Managed to get through to the end but don't think I will buy another from this author.

    "Gripping story"

This is a wonderful story with the battle of wits between William Marshall and King John. It has kept me awake listening to the wonderful descriptive life of Mediaeval England, Ireland and Wales with bits of Normandy thrown in. It is a historical fan's dream and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

"This Book Should Be Made Into a Film"

The book follows on from the Greatest Knight and is excellent. Wonderfully written, read with great expression and feeling by Christopher Scott who quite obviously loves Elizabeth Chadwick's characters. If you are interested in history, are romantic and love family, this is the book for you.

    "good mediaeval historical story"

I like this book - Elizabeth Chadwick makes the historical characters come alive. Her books are based on true people who have lived at this time in history and true historical fact, but embellished to make a really good story. I found 'The Scarlet Lion' - William Marshall a realy good exciting read. He was a true gentleman of the past and lived in the late 12th early 13th century which I find to be a particularly interesting period in the history of history of our country. The book was so enjoyable it made me feel as though I knew William and his wife Isobel de Clare and their family and all the other characters, Henry II of England and Eleanor of Acquitaine, his wife, Richard the Lionheart and the evil King John. A really good read, made me read more of Elizabeth Chadwick's books

    Story
    "The games we play"

This novel contains many twists and turns as it follows the life of William Marshall and his family. As one of the greatest knights of his time and close to the King John, William has to make decisions that see his wife and the King on opposing sides. As a child he is held hostage and well aware what a precarious position this is to held, now he first hands over his born son then the second to the King to be held as hostages.

I love the strong female character of Isabelle but to be honest I can’t help grinning at Christopher Scott’s interpretation. This novel shows her not as a victim of her times but one that plays a stacked hand with great finesse.

The narrator is clear and makes clear distinctions between each and every character. I have really enjoyed this novel and the reading of it. I would recommend it to any history buff and will definitely be listening to it again.

    "What a man!"
What did you like most about The Scarlet Lion?

I loved the way Elizabeth Chadwick brought William Marshall to life. He was perfect. The way she's weaves in the fact with the fiction. King John became an amazing round devious shock.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Scarlet Lion?

The death of William nearly had me in tears.

What about Christopher Scott’s performance did you like?

Christopher Scott is a brilliant narrator. He managed to age his voice with that of the main character.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

You get a full range of emotions while experiencing this book.

    "A fascinating life"

Following on from The Greatest Knight, in which Chadwick writes about William Marshall's early life, this takes us through from the death of King Richard. Slow moving as it progresses through John's reign in great detail, but also interesting, as a period that is often skimmed over. William's very success is distrusted by John, who relies on his loyalty but can never believe in a concept so alien to himself. He pushes William to the limit, threatening his family through his children, which puts great pressure on his marriage. That is beautifully portrayed, with the intimacies of a loving couple, living a very public life.
His life of duty takes him to the very end, as Regent of England. A fascinating biographical novel

    "History Buff"

Having read and listen to "The Greatest Knight"I could not wait to read and listen to the The Scarlet Lion, there is a great deal of truth in this story combined with a good dose of storytelling, I would say to anyone who said History is boring then listen to the story of William Marshal alive at the time of Henry 2nd and his sons Richard & John. I have read all Elizabeth Chadwicks books but these two are my favorites, while listening you feel you are there in the places mentioned in England and France.

I've only recently discovered Elizabeth Chadwick and am thoroughly enjoying all her books slowly. She brings her subject to life and I have been completely absorbed in the era she writes so well about. A fascinating story and one I know I will return to.
