The Ruins follows two American couples enjoying a pleasant, lazy beach holiday together in Mexico. On an impulse, they go off with newfound friends in search of one of their group: the young German who, in pursuit of a girl, has headed for the remote Mayan ruins, site of a fabled archeological dig.
This is what happens from the moment the searchers, moving into the wild interior, begin to suspect that there is an insidious, horrific "other" among them....

"A stunning horror thriller." (Publishers Weekly
"The book of the summer....Smith intends to scare the bejabbers out of you, and succeeds." (Stephen King)
"If you love ABC's Lost and the novels of King and Thomas Harris, you'll love this book." (USA Today)
This started out with a good and interesting premise - I thought it would develop into something about the Mayans - nope - just a bad horror book with a worse ending.
The book is well written and the story is quick paced. There are some genuinely gruesome moments in the book and the situation the characters fins themselves in is desperate, tense, and sadistic. My biggest criticism is that the characters are not that fleshed out. It is hard to empathize with their situation when you do not have a good sense of who these people are. However, the dynamics of the group come into play through the course of the story and I found it to be quite original. I recommend this book. It is a good quick summer read/listen.
This is the kind of book I like to read, but this one was truly awful and I had to make myself finish it because I felt like I would be wasting my money otherwise. Don't waste your time. Perhaps it lost something in the abridgement, maybe the unabridged version would have been better but I didn't have the time for it.
Lets see, bad story, bad ending. I read to be entertained, not depressed. Spare me from future books by this guy. Total waste of time and money.
