Very disappointed that I inadvertently bought an abridged book. Regret this purchase. Don't recommend it.

    "a full audible experance"

The regulators – this book is beyond a simple reading, this book is a listening experience.

First the narrator is outstanding. She breathes life into the story, rather than just read it. She catches the nuance of a scene or sentence and communicates them in sound. She knows when to slow, enunciate, give a lighthearted tone or a weary whisper. The characters are stern or funny, old or young, as they should be, by her reading.

Then the sound effects. I have seen this can be a touchy subject. I like the sound effects. Ii think the sounds add a lot to the vibe. The eerie wind, the swell of the keyboard sinisterly moaning from the low end of the sound spectrum, the howl of the creatures that are coming towards you… the sounds just breathe life into the story. In this version the sound effects are occasional. They are in between the chapters and they come up at times during the reading to spice up the scene. They are not here all of the time or even most of they time, they just show up here and there. I truly believe that the overall story is enhanced and improved by the effects.

Then about the story, well, it is Stephen king: there are marvelous happenings, creepy people and scary creatures. What did you expect?

    Story
    "Fast-paced King thriller!"
If you could sum up The Regulators in three words, what would they be?

    Lots of action.

What did you like best about this story?

The setting of "Poplar Street" was so descriptive. The way it started with the paperboy zig-zagging from house to house on his bike set the scene very nicely. You got to know the people on the block almost instantly.

Have you listened to any of Kate Nelligan’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but she is good. Her ability to get dramatic is awesome. She also drops a little nugget towards the end when she sings quite well.

Who was the most memorable character of The Regulators and why?

Seth (the autistic boy). At first he seems like a pain in the butt burden for Audrey (his aunt). However, as the story progresses you can see a loving child with a brilliant, if not genius mind.

    Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this King thriller quite a bit and didn't want my adventure on Poplar Street to end!

    Story
"Not one of the best King books"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I enjoyed the book OK, but it was hard to really buy into. It seems like the story was a stretch and not well developed. I got through it but it didn't leave me wondering about the story or characters. This is probably one of my least favorite Bachman books that I have read so far. Rage is probably the best so far but it is not available anymore because of all the crazy people out there that like to blame books and movies for their stupid behavior.

Would you be willing to try another book from Stephen King? Why or why not?

Yes, I usually enjoy all Stephen King books as they have very well developed characters and background that never translate well to film due to time constraints and viewers lack of attention. Any Stephen King book translated to a movie would require at least a four to 8 hour movie to give it justice. People to to read books more instead of waiting for the movies. The movies are actually much better if you have read the books first.

What about Kate Nelligan’s performance did you like?

Not bad, but didn't get me into it as much as other readers, but it could be that the story just wasn't as good at other books.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

maybe, but I doubt it due to the reasons I've listed above.

    "Interesting"

This was a pretty good story and the narration was nice enough. It wasn't my favorite by SK but it was definitely worth my credit. I did not realize until after listening for a little while that this story is tied to Desperation. I wasn't a huge fan of that one either but both stories are worth the listen. Of the two, I think this one is best.

    Story
    "Regulators: Definitely King!"
Where does The Regulators rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the lesser King books, but still good. A story that keeps moving.

What did you like best about this story?

The imagination to turn a neighborhood into a war zone for an afternoon.

What does Kate Nelligan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Being a guy, I usually do not like female narrators, but she did great.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Shootout in your neighborhood.

    Story
"Abridged Stephen King is not worth it -"
Would you try another book from Stephen King and/or Kate Nelligan?

absolutley. King is a master storyteller & part of his genius is in the details he gives his readers. Many of these details are lost in an abridged book, very little character development, etc.

What didn’t you like about Kate Nelligan’s performance?

reader was kinda flat to me, part of my problem was the fact that i did not enjoy this particular story all that much in addition to the fact that it was abridged.

    Any additional comments?

I have read over approx 75% of Kings books. I'd rate this one in the lower 25% - overall, i was dissaponted w/the abridged version, the story & the reader.
