Publisher's summary

His epic masterwork Speaks the Nightbird, a tour de force of witch hunt terror in a colonial town, was hailed by Sandra Brown as "deeply satisfying...told with matchless insight into the human soul."

Now, Robert McCammon brings the hero of that spellbinding novel, Matthew Corbett, to 18th-century New York, where a killer wields a bloody and terrifying power over a bustling city carving out its identity - and over Matthew's own uncertain destiny.

The unsolved murder of a respected doctor has sent ripples of fear throughout a city teeming with life and noise and commerce. Who snuffed out the good man's life with the slash of a blade on a midnight street? The local printmaster has labeled the fiend "the Masker," adding fuel to a volatile mystery...and when the Masker claims a new victim, hardworking young law clerk Matthew Corbett is lured into a maze of forensic clues and heart-pounding investigation that will both test his natural penchant for detection and inflame his hunger for justice.

In the strangest twist of all, the key to unmasking the Masker may await in an asylum where the Queen of Bedlam reigns - and only a man of Matthew's reason and empathy can unlock her secrets. From the seaport to Wall Street, from society mansions to gutters glimmering with blood spilled by a deviant, Matthew's quest will tauntingly reveal the answers he seeks - and the chilling truths he cannot escape.

The Queen of Bedlam review

This is the second Robert McCammon book I've listened to. They were both great. The narration was well done and the stories themselves gripping. I enjoy the way he describes people and events and there were places where I laughed out loud at a scene he was painting, even as the story itself may have been in a serious place in the telling. I highly recommend this book.

A great follow up to the first book

Honestly, it might even be better than the first. I came upon this series by accident and I haven't regretted it. Even though it is marketed as historical fiction, it is really a great mystery/thriller. The characters are fully fleshed and interesting. The plot is far from predictable, but the reader is also kept in the dark on some of the details that lead the narrator to solve the puzzle. I loved it and I would recommend it to anyone who loves mysteries. - AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY

Great Audio Book

I have had the paperback format for this book for sometime and wasn’t able to get into it as quickly as I wanted. I had chatted with Hunter Goatley and he spoke highly of the audible addition, so I purchased it. You will not be disappointed! A great audible book which has helped me to continue purchasing the rest of the series on Audible as well as renew my subscription.

Even better than the first book.

I really like the direction the story took. Very appropriate for the character. The performance was just as excellent.

Absolutely fantastic

What does Edoardo Ballerini bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narrator is one of the very best I have ever heard. He does an excellent job of performing and lends just the right emotional emphasis. His female voices are not at all silly or off putting. Completely masterful.

Any additional comments?

This series is completely captivating. I normally dont like murder/mystery type novels but the writing paints such a clear and detailed picture...and the narrator does such a fantastic job...that I have been thoroughly entertained. I look forward to following the series.

HOLD ON TO YOUR BRITCHES...

Another gripping volume in the Matthew Corbett series had me on the edge of my seat. McCammon describes the time period in fascinating details and creates characters both colorful and unique. I could not stop listening! It is also humorous to catch a little innuendo here and there that smacks of today's language. Not for the squeamish, it portrays gritty reality of life in a time where justice was skewed, corruption commonplace and survival was a daily task. While the long list of characters may seem overwhelming at first, you will grow to know the key players, preparing you for more Corbett adventures as "problem solver". I love this series and am immediately moving on to the next book, "Mister Slaughter". Also, if you enjoy this book, you might enjoy the BBC series "Ripper Street". Check it out.
