Editorial reviews

Why You Should Download This Audiobook: Good character dramas are best shared with others, like good wine on special occasions. Bryce Courtenay's wonderful story of a child coming of age in a country ripped apart by racism is such a vintage—rich and complex, an experience you'll want to talk about long after the last words are spoken.

Publisher's summary

"First with your head and then with your heart." So says Hoppie Groenewald, boxing champion, to a seven-year-old boy who dreams of being the welterweight champion of the world. For the young Peekay, it is a piece of advice he will carry with him throughout his life.

Born in a South Africa divided by racism and hatred, this one small boy will come to lead all the tribes of Africa. Through enduring friendships with Hymie and Gideon, Peekay gains the strength he needs to win out. And in a final conflict with his childhood enemy, the Judge, Peekay will fight to the death for justice.

Excellent and engaging. Hard to stop listening.

I read this book in 1990. It was suggested to me by a white South African woman who had left her country to escape arrest because she ran a school for kids with intellectual disabilities and included black children as students. She had amazing stories about her own nanny and outsmarting the Johannesburg police. So, this is the framework in which I first read this book.
I loved these characters. I loved how Peekay was educated, how he worked through problems, how he always kept moving forward with hope, I loved the boxing and how Africa is described in such lovely detail. I don’t know how the sentiments of this book will hold up to scrutiny in the current climate of race relations in 2020. There are terrible atrocities committed against the African characters and the author does not skim over the difficult parts. The writer never takes it lightly or minimizes the importance of the struggle.
If you don’t like boxing when you start, you’ll at least respect the process in the end.
Of note, the performance by Humphrey Bower is extraordinary. It is the best I’ve experienced. Bower is genius with accents, with gender, with emotion. I felt like there were multiple readers. Bravo, Mr. Bower!

You wii be happy that you listened to this beautiful story

Have you ever finished a book only to feel like you have said goodbye to a good friend? This is one of those books. It is a story of love, loyalty, respect and friendship. It speaks to the heart and reminds the reader of the most important life lessons while spinning an unforgettable tale of a young boy who grows up in South Africa. The life and universal struggles experienced by Peekay are a reminder of the harsh wounds that children suffer and remain with them for years and how loving adults who invest in children can help to influence their lives.

Life changing book delivered by a masterful voice.

As my favorite movie, since I was a child, I read/listened to the book for the first time. As it did more than 25 years ago I am moved to action, to live a life full of great leaps forward and to lead and teach others to do the same. Be prepared to be motivated.

Listen for 2 hours, then decide

I just happen to grab this book for no reason in particular. After about two hours into the book, the story became so captivating, trying to stop listening was almost impossible.
