Ayla and Jondalar leave the safety of the lands of the Mammoth Hunters and embark on a seemingly impossible journey across an entire continent. Their goal is the Cro-Magnon settlement in what is now southern France where Jondalar lived as a young man. Accompanied by the half-tame Wolf, the superb stallion, Racer, and the mare, Whinney, they brave both savage enemies and the elemental dangers of weather and terrain in their search for the place that will become Home.
Jean Auel's imaginative reconstruction of pre-historic life, rich in detail of language, culture, myth and ritual, has become a set text in schools and colleges around the world.

"Not her best story."
Bit too much description, some chunks of the story could have been missed out and it would have improved the overall book. Still, about to start book 5. keep going, with this book. it's worth it.
"Enthralling and exciting"
Much better storylines than 'Mammoth Hunters'. Loved the glacier section. Would make a good film. Who could take the parts I wonder...
"Time to stop"
Cutting it shorter would have helped. The endless repetition of descriptions, and the history of the cave lion, and how Ayla was brought up.
And the distinct la k of story.
There isn't a story. It's all become a bit formulaic, and I often felt I was being lectured on the flora and fauna of the time.
She did the best she could with a poor book.
Very well written, and a pleasure to listen to. In depth descriptions As good as book one and two. The voice is perfect for the story
