"A well read update of the classic"

When I first listened to this production from Max McLean I was torn between the desire to hear the words as written by John Bunyan and the easier understanding of this slight update in grammar and wording. In the end I feel that the small changes were worth it and this is a book I would recommend to anyone who wants to get acquainted with a treasure of English literature. Max does such a fine job with intonation and clarity to the point of making me wistful that I don't have such an ability - but then I haven't the years of training and God given ability that he does. After shopping around for a great rendition of Pilgrims Progress I feel that I have picked out a gem.

    "Where is part two?"

The book as it is is good. But it does not contain the pilgramage of Christian's wife and children, the second half of the book.

    "Great reading of a classic"

This reader does a great job. And I think the text was tuned up to be a bit more digestible to 21st century ears, yet still seems to have the original flavor of the book, at least I think so (never read it!). While the trip is allegory, I'm a fan of journey stories, so take this into account. This book was on my "must read" list, and now I'm satisfied, though I can see listening through again. I can definitely see echoes of Pilgrim's progress in other works I've read, now they should make a bit more sense. I recommend it highly.

"Updated English GOOD, Missing Part 2 BAD"

    Narrator is very good!

This is an excellent adaptation of the original English by Judith Markham, keeping the flavor, while delivering meaning to today's reader. Which makes the fact that it is missing Part 2 all the more lamentable. I'd hoped to go find part 2 with the same updated language, but Audible does not have it.

NOTE TO AUDIBLE: You should either include part 2 on this audio book, or otherwise clearly mark it as "Part 1 ONLY", or at least as "abridged". Any chance we can get a Judith Markham updated part 2?

"This reading is not the whole book."

This reading of Pilgrim's Progess is a rip-off. Although it is advertised as "Unabridged," it includes only Part One of the book and the language has been modernized. The reading is only half of Bunyan's original book, which has two parts, and the language has shortened it as well. Be wary of buying this version if you truly want an "unabridged" edition.

    "Excellent book!!!"

This has been one of the best books I have listened to on Audible. The reader is excellent and really brings this timeless story to life. I have read other adaptations of this book, and this is my favorite translation. As a Christian, this book truly brings my faith to life.

Books on tape -- every commuter's friend. American history is my choice but then, in books, as in music, I'm all over the place.

"Shame on me for just "reading" this classic."

First things first: Max McLean is the first and only person I've ever thought could hold me rapt with attention simply by reading a phone book. What a talent and what a wonderful way he shares it.

A classic is never a class by accident. The Pilgrim's Progress is a classic, of course, and for good reason. It is difficult to explain the beauty of its context and ethereal flow. A beautiful story whose complexity seems almost impossible to have truly been written without Divine intervention. (Before anyone rolls their eyes, please, listen to it and then, if you still can, roll your eyes.)

I am profoundly grateful to have found this book and profoundly ashamed that it took me nearly 54 years to do so.

May I also suggest that anyone reading this review also acquire Max McLean's reading of the Holy Bible. It changes everything.

"One of my all time favorites!"

There are a few books in addition to the Bible that I think every Christian is tremendously blessed to read, and this is one of them (and high on that list if I had to number them). In addition to that, Max McLean does a fantastic job narrating this book!

My wife and I listened to it together and greatly enjoyed it.

I believe every Christian will benefit immensely from the thought-provoking message and spiritual content of "Pilgrim's Progress".

    "OLD CLASSIC SIMPLIFIED"
If you could sum up The Pilgrim's Progress in three words, what would they be?

A very wordy allegory that was made much easier for me to grasp in this translation and by the dramatic readin by MM.

What other book might you compare The Pilgrim's Progress to and why?

The Bible, because there are many stories that reveal spiritual truths.

Have you listened to any of Max McLean’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Yes; great as always.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    Not finished it.

    Any additional comments?

    NO
