Publisher's summary

This compilation, comprising a Baker's (Street) Dozen of his adventures, re-creates the gas-lit, fog-enshrouded world of Victorian London as once more Sherlock Holmes urges, 'Come, Watson, the game is afoot!'

Series of pastiches are improving!

This latest Gerard Kelly pastiche collection is showing signs of great improvement. Although no non-Canonical work will ever match the original ACD stories, this trove of delights moves closer than many other stories written in the style of Doyle. My one complaint, again, is the voice Simon Shepherd chooses when he reads the Holmes' lines. His Watson and every other character is spot-on. His Holmes is too thin and reedy-sounding. The only real flaw in an otherwise excellent book.

Fantastic stories

This book was one of those that made me sad when it ended. I highly recommend it if you are a fan of Sherlock Holmes. Of all the pastiche books I have read, this is by far one of the best. The author presents clever mysteries, and writes in a style that is both similar to the Canon, while maintaining a sensitivity and style that was a joy to listen to.

Mix of Good and Annoying

The performance was good, but the voice for Holmes was incredibly out of character. All the other voices fit reasonably well. Holmes sounded like a corny cartoon version of an old professor.
The other annoyances came from the story itself. The author had Holmes and Watson saying "old boy," "old fellow," "old chap," etc WAY too much, to the point it felt highly contrived. There's also a lot that Holmes does and says in this book that is incredibly out of character for Sherlock. The first story alone has a number of examples of this.
There are a number of good stories in this series that I enjoyed but I feel it's lacking in some important Sherlockian flavors.

Voice of Holmes

Voice of Holmes is real pathetic. I just cannot believe such a voice would be allowed.
