WOW - emotional and gripping

This is the first novel that I have read/listened to by Patry Francis. I loved how the story spanned so many decades. I especially like how the narrator did all the children's voices and then moved into adulthood. The snarkiness but empathy with Mila was really impressive in the very last part of the book. I felt like I could hear my own teenager in her sarcastic yet vulnerable state. That's great writing. I could not believe that she let her mom go the first time though!!!! That was really, really frustrating at first.

I'd recommend this for a summer beach day!

Blown Away!

If you could sum up The Orphans of Race Point in three words, what would they be?

Epic, Mysterious, Romantic

Have you listened to any of Cobb Amanda’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This narrator was terrific. I have listened to other books by her, but I think she is really coming into her own and doing more precise character voices which is really fun to hear. So great with the Portuguese! And shifting narrators? Points of view? Children's voices!? That takes skill, man. Awesome!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I admit that I teared up once or twice, but I felt more outrage at the brutality of the circumstances. And the father with the kid at the end!? How could the daughter still be so nice to him!?? ARGH.

Any additional comments?

Great ride. It sucked me in.

The Orphans of Race Point

Ms. Cobb's excellent narrative skills make this saga of love, murder, and faith a novel you will want to listen to for hours on end! Her skillful voices and accents -- and the professional ease with which she narrates -- captivate the listener and quickly draw him/her into the hearts and minds of the characters. (Her portrayal of Mia is especially outstanding!) Nice!

Believe It Or Not

First of all, I found the reader to have the most annoying voice. For example; every time she said,' EX..CUUSE ME?' I cringed. It was not her fault that too often, the main character repeated someone's statement as if she needed assurance. Nevertheless, the story in general, was a little unbelievable. Having been a priest for ten years, surely he would have protected himself better than to go flying off to 'rescue' a female he knew little or nothing about and who wasn't even a Catholic. The fact that her husband was a violent and powerful man in the community, would have given any sane person reason to make better choices. I would also question a judicial system that would condem an indvidual to life in prison when the victum's body was never found. Too many odds and ends for my liking. Still, I was determined to listen to the entire novel that had a predictible ending. I would not recommend this one.

Distracting

Story is interesting enough with some twists, however having grown up in Provincetown and graduating PHS in 1976, I found some serious flaws in the production: 1. Name pronunciations: Costa is pronounced cawstah, NOT coeshtah. Silva is pronounced silva, NOT seeeeeelvah.... and so on. No one ever (except perhaps our great-grandparents) pronounced each other's names with accents. Ever. Those aren't even Portuguese names, they were names given by immigration officials at Ellis island because they couldn't pronounce the names our grandparents had. No one from town attended Nauset Regional High School in the 70s because school choice was not in effect around here until the 1990s. And NRHS is located in EastHAM, not (sniff) Eastum. I'll stop there but my point is that more research should have been performed before the narration was begun. The butchering of all that and more was distracting and irritating.

Interesting twist

I enjoyed the narrator and the descriptions of P-town. I felt I was there in the wind and the sand and among the quirky Portuguese neighbors and family.
I enjoyed the progression of character development that kept the flow of the story going. It was so puzzling to me to have Gus imprisoned with such flimsy evidence so the twist that occurred was a total surprise. I'm listening this to this on a long auto trip so have found it very entertaining.
