What the Critics Say

"What Mr. O'Brian has created is no less than a tapestry of English life in the early 19th century that is almost Dickensian in its scope." (New York Observer)

    "The Nutmeg"

Patrick Tull does his usual great job in narrating this story. This book picks up where the last one left off on a deserted island building a boat to escape. I love the description of Stephen and Martin on their naturalist wanderings. I found the description of the Nutmeg as a sweet smelling ship interesting and then how they had to "sweeten" the Surprise when returning to her. Great sea stories and battles in the exotic Malay seas.

    Story
"The uncharted sea can be dangerous"
What made the experience of listening to The Nutmeg of Consolation the most enjoyable?

It reminds the reader of a time when the world was truly uncharted and a dangerous place to roam around in, all sorts of bad things in your path

What did you like best about this story?

Getting a new ship and it smelt so good no bad odors and the crews pulling together

Have you listened to any of Patrick Tull’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I enjoy Mr Tulls performance and look forward to more of his books

Who was the most memorable character of The Nutmeg of Consolation and why?

A full cast of characters that I enjoyed

    Any additional comments?

Look forward to reading the next one

    Story
"You never want it to be over!!!"
If you could sum up The Nutmeg of Consolation in three words, what would they be?

    history, drama, tenderness

Have you listened to any of Patrick Tull’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Superb as always

    Any additional comments?

One is better off by starting the series from the beginning!

    "Don't by this narrator"
What did you like best about The Nutmeg of Consolation? What did you like least?

The writing of this book is not at fault and is as clever as ever.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Patrick Tull?

    Simon Vance

    Any additional comments?

Narrator is unbearable to listen to as his odd pauses and total lack of voice changes between characters force him to ad the "he said" and "she said" at the end of every spoken word.
