Do not let this book fool you!

STORY - The Negotiator is an inspirational book but, foremost, it is an excellent mystery/romance. The excitement starts early in the story and doesn't let up. There is a complex crime, interesting investigation, emotional hostage negotiations and an engaging romance. Sprinkled through the 10 1/2 hours there is about 30 minutes of religious conversation, but it fits with the story line well and is not overpowering. The language is clean and there is no sex or alcohol, but do not mistake this book for wimpy religious chick lit!

NARRATOR - The narrator is okay, but there are much better ones out there. He doesn't do female characters well, and occasionally I got confused who was speaking. Sometimes he pauses midsentence and then reads the rest of it like he lost his place, but these minor irritations don't detract from the total experience.

BOTTOM LINE - This is a very good book. I'm moving on to the next one in the series.

The O'Malley Clan - one at a time

Before you listen to this great book, PLEASE read "Danger in the Shadows" first (winner of multiple book awards). You will better understand people that come in and out of this story after reading that book.

Kate O'Malley is a negotiator, and the first story of the O'Malley "family," orphans who met in a home and who made the decision to become a family...they chose their own last name, and the books slowly reveal bits and pieces of how they came to the home, met, and became family. I love every single book...I read them when they first came out, but hearing them just adds another dimension to the great stories.

well yeah but...

I agree this book series is a little trite, but actually, Ms. Henderson has obviously done good research into the individual careers of her protagonists. I like the stories. I just ignore the trite-ness and I'm glad that the world of relaxation literature has some good interesting Christian stories. What an awesome way to explain the gospel and the proofs of Jesus and the church. That got the extra star handsdown.

Worth the Listen

This is the first installment in the O'Malley series. I enjoyed this book, it was suspenseful and it had a great christian theme. I think there could of been a little more romance but the book was still good. I have listened to the entire O'Malley series and this is one of the best, though the entire series is very good. I think it is good to see christians operating in these type of roles.

The O'Malleys

This is the kind of book you hate to see come to an end. It's exciting to know there are more in the series! My husband enjoys these as well and so on our long trips to visit the kids we listen to these. Makes you not want to stop for dinner

OK...definately not great

One other reviewer touched on it but I found the book predictable and the suspense lacking. The author never really says why this case in particular bothers Kate so much if as she says she gets one of this type every month or so.
I also felt that the religious aspect was more heavily weighted than anything else which was a definite disappointment considering I have never had a prospective "date" or friend question me about my faith only 36 hours into a relationship of any sort. Nor have I ever considered dropping a friend or relationship because our beliefs were different. That would be very judgmental/hard line stance for a Christian. Sorry but this will be the last book of this series I read.

Beautiful Story with a touch of excitement!

I have read all of Ms. Henderson's books except the ones after her writing hiatus. This is a solid story experienced through the eyes of an unbeliever who walks in a very dangerous profession (law enforcement). Good narration except for the fact that Dave should have a British accent and the women do not sound like women. Yet, it is still lovely to hear the book read.

Good tension but a bit cliche'd

Kate O'Malley is a strong heroine with an interesting job and psychological profile. She's also lovely, but of course completely unaware of her beauty and makes no effort to be so (that's the kind of cliche I'm talking about). She's an unbeliever which makes her off-limits to the rigid Dave (but I know men who refuse to be "unequally yoked" even for a date, so that is actually quite realistic). So we have that tension between romance and faith, and a pretty good mystery too. It's a good read. However, the O'Malley clan is not to be believed. They have a 4th of July gathering that is one long, trite series of cliches. It is an awkward and obvious contrivance that this huge stable of wonderful adopted sibs with fascinating jobs exists solely so that we can have lots more O'Malley books. Sort of like the Alpha Pets, I guess.

All the men seemed the same

I have to start by saying that I did not like the narrator. First, he almost came across as creepy when I think he was trying to sound flirty. Second, all the characters sounded alike. Third, a couple of times in the book it mentions that the male romantic interest is British, and yet there was no attempt to sound British.
The story line of the book was not uninteresting, but the characters were two dimensional. The witty banter was not witty. It was just awkward. There were certain phrases that were used too frequently. The male romantic interest did weird, inappropriate things like touching her face or hair.
I listened to the whole book because of the story line, but I will not listen to any more of the series... It's the same narrator too.
