Publisher's summary

The room was on the fourth floor, and the door was locked - with the key on the inside. The windows were closed and fastened - on the inside. The chimney was too narrow for a cat to get through. So how did the murderer escape? And whose were the two angry voices heard by the neighbours as they ran up the stairs?

Nobody in Paris could find any answers to this mystery - except Auguste Dupin, who could see further and think more clearly than other people. The answers to the mystery were all there, but only a clever man could see them.

"The most consistent of all series in terms of language control, length, and quality of storytelling." (David R. Hill, ELT Journal Review, 2008)

Good Adaptation

Although others have stated this item was listed as "unabridged," I did not have this issue; I was looking for an abridged version. Having read the original story and one other adaptation, I felt this abridged version was fairly faithful to Poe's story. The main characteristic that was changed was the language; the language was simplified and modernized, which I welcomed in an audiobook.

As long as you know that you are purchasing an abridged version of the story delivered in simplified language, you should enjoy this classic story.

Dumbed Down

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This is a "dumbed down" version of the story. Most unfortunately the description does not indicate the rewritten and edited text. The missing parts are really part of the beauty of Poe's writing.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Poe is a remarkable storyteller, and the ending does not disappoint.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He was far too friendly, light-hearted.

What character would you cut from The Murders in Rue Morgue (Adaptation)?

All the characters are vital to the story.

Any additional comments?

This adaptation was poorly done. While the description says it is unabrigded.
