Publisher's Summary

On a winter night in 1964, Dr. David Henry is forced by a blizzard to deliver his own twins. His son, born first, is perfectly healthy. Yet when his daughter is born, he sees immediately that she has Down's Syndrome. Rationalizing it as a need to protect Norah, his wife, he makes a split-second decision that will alter all of their lives forever. He asks his nurse to take the baby away to an institution and never to reveal the secret.

But Caroline, the nurse, cannot leave the infant. Instead, she disappears into another city to raise the child herself. So begins this beautifully told story that unfolds over a quarter of a century in which these two families, ignorant of each other, are yet bound by the fateful decision made that long-ago winter night.

A brilliantly crafted, stunning debut, The Memory Keeper's Daughter explores the way life takes unexpected turns, and how the mysterious ties that hold a family together help us survive the heartache that occurs when long-buried secrets burst into the open.

What the Critics Say

"Edwards has written a deeply moving drama covering 25 years in the lives of two families and exploring the damage a single lie can do to all involved. Plimpton's performance brings it all into sharp focus." (AudioFile)

    "The worst book yet!"

I wanted to buy this book for awhile, But I didn't because of so many bad reviews. Well, I finally gave in and bought it..........

It was lousy!!!! When you listen to the preview the book sounds like it will be so interesting! But the interesting part is over in the first 15 minutes!! Don't waste your time with this one! Seriously!!!!

    "Starts well, drags on....."

I can't give the book a bad review because the narrator does a good job and for the first half of the book I REALLY enjoyed the writing and the story. However, as many other reviewers complain, it does begin to drag on and on and on in the second half of the book, and it is truly a shame.

As talented as is this writer, a good editor could really have done a lot to improve this novel.

    "no so good"

While the plot idea was good, the climax of the story was over in the first ten minutes. I really wanted to like this book, but it really went nowhere very slowly and had no point. There were no real twists, turns, or confrontations...just decades of unhappy lives.

    "Moving and complex"

The Memory Keeper's Daughter centers around a profound decision made following the birth of twins. It weaves the lives of two families and how that decision affects every single person in a different way. Each character is well drawn out and you feel as if you know them. The narration by Martha Plimpton is simply superb, the best in all the Audible books I have enjoyed. I give this 4 stars instead of 5 because of a very slow and repetitive section near the beginning, and also because it was not quite as good as the books I have rated as a 5. Still, a remarkable novel and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

    "memory Keeper's daughter"

I found The Memory Keeper's Daughter to be a compelling and beautifully written book. The narration makes it come alive and is masterfully executed. The story is wonderfully entertaining and hard to push the pause button. You will enjoy this story of love, fear, guilt, deep regret, constant awareness of the hopes and dreams we all have and the bravery of the human spirit to keep trying to make them come true.

    "OK story, distracting narration"

This story was interesting, but a bit long. The premise is an interesting one. When I think about listening to this book I think mostly about the overy dramatic reading by Martha Plimpton.
