What the Critics Say

"In the end it is the serious exploration of human character that gives the books [in the Aubrey/Maturin series] their greatest power." (The New York Times Book Review)

    "Great Reader"

I respectfully feel that the other reviewer was unfair. There is a tendency to prefer whichever reader one hears first. In the case of Mr. Vance, he is, in fact, British. Consequently it is absurd to question the authenticity of the accent. I find that the different characters' individual voices and accents are more distinguishable and more dramatically presented by Mr. Vance. Mr. Tull is perhaps a touch better with the third person narrative. At any rate the series is top notch whichever reader one prefers.

    "prefer Patrick Tull version"

I dearly love the Aubrey/Maturin series, but I far prefer Patrick Tull's reading of the series having listened to recordings from both Simon Vance and Patrick Tull. Audible has both versions, so be careful.

    "Wrong Narrator"

I erroneously downloaded this version. My opinion is if you are not listening to the Patrick Tull narration, you are missing out! Mr. Vance has a reaching and strained grasp of the characters. His cadence is too fast (note the comparative audio length)seemingly speeding through the book. Spend the extra money for Tull,he's the man!

    "Wonderful"

More of the same great work by the author. I have to agree with commenter Lawrence however, that your narrator preference is bound to lie with whom you heard first. I have seen rave reviews for Tull and that is well and good, but I quite enjoy Vance's reading and find no fault whatsoever with his speech, speed or voices. Whatever narrator you prefer I would suggest that you pay attention to stick to the same person so you don't end up disappointed.

"Jack and Steven are on a great adventure"
Where does The Mauritius Command rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This one is pretty good and it has alot of action most enjoyable

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Mauritius Command?

I liked many parts but the moment Jack found out about his family was a classic

Have you listened to any of Simon Vance’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Mr Vance is a great reader, a true professional and a pleasure to listen too.

Who was the most memorable character of The Mauritius Command and why?

Two, both the main characters make the lasting impression

    Any additional comments?

Look forward to listening to many more, great story line

    "3 blessings; O'Brian, Audible, & Simon Vance"

I bought my first O'Brian book of the series at Victoria Station in London, while enroute to an assignment for the USAF, well before the series was complete, and well before the series was available in the US. Since then I have enjoyed the entire series in print every few years, and enjoy it just as much as the first reading. Then I discovered audible, with the advent of the ipod, the ipod and it's cousins I suppose are the fourth blessing. Printed books are sacred, but I get as much and sometimes more from these recordings, and I believe the credit for that is due very much to narrator SIMON VANCE, who is nothing less than a master. I like to think that he knew the author and that they appreciated each other's work. I receive great pleasure from the author and this narrator and I envy any soul who has yet to experience the combination. The British are different from all of the rest of us, and Vance brings you Britain.

"Great account of a short naval campaign"

I really enjoyed this installment of the Aubrey-Maturin series. Once you get in to the novel it's a very interesting blow by blow of a relatively short naval campaign to gain the Mauritius Islands for Britain. I've read several works which address pitched fleet actions in the era, but chronacles of naval campaigns such as this one are more rare. Aubrey and Maturin have to deal with naval and land combat, as well as intelligence concerns, while dealing at the same time from issues caused by other British officers. I highly enjoyed this book.

    "Best so far"

I am hooked. I travel 15 to 20 hrs per week and have really enjoyed the first 4 books in this series. Simon Vance brings the characters to life for me and I prefer his interpretation. I will continue this series to the end, I expect.

    "The Maritius Command"

A really good sea yarn in typical Obrian detail. The characters are very well fleshed out. The geography is a little confusing, however, and I would recommend having a world atlas close at hand. T thoroughly enjoyable read, er listen.

    "Good book, bad narrator"

While the book and the series are the best I've ever read or listened to, the narrator is horrible. He is hard to understand and is terrible at altering his voice for different characterrs; not to mention the worst attept at accents. The series is also read by Patrick Tull. He is top notch and is authentically English with wonderful accents and voices.
