The Majors: Brotherhood of War Series, Book 3 | [W. E. B. Griffin]

The Majors: Brotherhood of War Series, Book 3

Dien Bien Phu. Saigon. Hanoi. In 1954, they were only exotic names from a French campaign halfway around the world. But now American fighting men - proven on the bloody beaches of Normandy and in the minefields of Korea - are summoned to help beat back the guerilla forces of Ho Chi Minh. To some, the “secret” war in Indochina was the depth of folly. To others, like the majors, it pointed to the heights of glory.

I spend about 55 hours a week driving and really enjoy having a good book to pass the miles.

    "Soap opera for men"

I have really enjoyed this series by W. E. B. Griffin. The character development is great and the narrator, Eric G Dove is very good. This entire series has been like a soap opera for men. I find myself getting attached to some characters and not liking others. There is plenty of military action but there is also some of the day to day stuff that happens in life. The descriptions of the day to day life in the military is very accurate and the details are spot on. The narrator gets most of his terminology right and keeps his characters in their unique style of voice throughout the series. If you're a military history buff or just looking for a good series to start give this one a try.

    "More Army"

Next in the series of a pretty well researched book--details the development of Army aviation from the perspective of the characters in the series. I wonder when one of them will get killed off? Next--"The Colonels"

    "Awesome characters, good storyline."
Where does The Majors rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's in the Top 10, I'd say. Griffin is among my favorite authors for his in depth character writing. The historical writing is fascinating for those who want a better understanding of WWII. Complex and multiple storylines keep the series from getting stale.

Which character – as performed by Eric G. Dove – was your favorite?

Craig is my favorite, he's evolved from an uptight spoiled brat to someone you root for.

    Any additional comments?

I have started listening to 3 different Griffin series now. One word of caution- "series" is accurate. Don't expect to read one book and have everything neatly tied up at the end. It's comparable to watching one episode of a miniseries. It seems they are taking their time to release the rest of the books of the series, even though they were written 20 years ago. When I'm wrapped up in a series, I don't really care to jump around to other writers and constantly check if a new book has come out.
