Publisher's summary

In pre-war Prague, the dreams of two young lovers are shattered when they are separated by the Nazi invasion. Then, decades later, thousands of miles away in New York, there's an inescapable glance of recognition between two strangers. Providence is giving Lenka and Josef one more chance. From the glamorous ease of life in Prague before the Occupation, to the horrors of Nazi Europe, The Lost Wife explores the power of first love, the resilience of the human spirit, and the strength of memory.

Hauntingly beautiful!

I loved this book! I loved this book! I loved this book! The story is beautiful and sad and horrific. It is a necessary book in its details of the Holocaust, the realness of the Holocaust. It is also beautiful in its telling of those who managed to escape and live their lives in safety... but their loss and their joy is so clear to the reader that you no longer view them as "lucky", they just suffered differently. I listened to it in one day... not talking to anyone while listening. Rewinding when I reached the end to hear the beginning again. This is a beautifully narrated story and so worth reading. Brava!!

Poetically Haunting

I was riveted by this story which was narrated in a poetically haunting style. It gave an in-depth look into the holocaust and the life and love of its main characters which I will never forget.

Great Read!

I don't typically write reviews and I must say I very much enjoyed this book. I enjoyed learning about places I have never heard of and I loved the story of the two main characters. However, my one upset of this story is it opens with bait, you want to read to the end so you can finally see what happens and then when you get there, you learn about them both, it just ends. You get no closure and maybe I should just use my imagination but to be so hopeful for so much more for it to just end, that was disappointing for me anyways. With that said, I still suggest this book as a must read.

I could not stop listening

Story is based on actual people and experiences. I listened to the whole book in two days. So sad and yet so honest in demonstrating the intricacies of human interactions and the outcomes of beliefs and decisions...

Heartbreakingly beautiful

A powerful story of love & family, and loss. Keep the tissues handy because you'll be crying the whole way through.

Unquensionable spirit

This book will be forever with my mind. It has answered and opened many questions about the treatment of the Jewish people for me. I have been interested in what occurred in the camps and also opened other questions in my studies about this unfortunate part of the history of that time period. Thank You.

Beautifully written, flawlessly performed

I have an extensive collection (print & audio) of World War II and Holocaust stories and history. This book is among the best.

Sucked right in

I was sucked into this book pretty quickly. The audiobook was great because you have a male and female voice for Josef and Lenka. I debated between giving 4 or 5 stars but only because I wanted the story to continue and was disappointed when it came to an abrupt end. But I realized that was a testament to how great of a story this book was.
