Publisher's Summary

He was wearing red shoes! With silver heels! Elisabeth Devine causes quite a stir on her arrival in the village. No one can understand why the head of a big inner city school would want to come to sleepy little Barton-in-the-Dale, to a primary with more problems than school dinners. And that's not even counting the challenges the mysterious Elisabeth herself will face: a bitter former head teacher, a grumpy caretaker, and a duplicitous chair of governors, to name but a few. Then there's the gossip. After all, a woman who would wear red shoes to an interview is obviously capable of anything….

Warm, funny and poignant, Gervase Phinn's first novel for adults creates a fictional world that's as real as can be. It will delight all his fans, and win him many more.

    Story
"Gentle and enjoyable, but not riveting"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

No, I would never presume to do such a thing.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

It was quite obvious where the story was going from quite early on, but this was no detriment to the story.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

    Yes

Was The Little Village School worth the listening time?

Yes, I enjoyed the story and the characters, many of which can be found in any Yorkshire village (the gossips, the judgmental, the troublemaker etc.). It is a departure from Gervase's autobiographical books. Here he has entered the realms of fiction based on his school experiences and has produced a fully rounded story of village life centred on the new headmistress. We are slowly introduced to the character of Elizabeth through her sympathetic dealings with the village children in her charge, her relationship with the School Governors and Education officers, some of whom are for her and some against. Her own private reasons for moving to this small village school in the Yorkshire Dales from a prestigious city school are also revealed.

    "classic gervase, heartwarming yorkshire tale"

The little village school is gervase writing at his best. Yet another gervase phinn book which the whole family can enjoy. His simplistic style and amazing voice bring the book to life. My only criticism is that he has used some paragraphs eg. The bit about the crematorium from his autobiographies nearly word for word- saying that im gervase phinn obsessed so know his books nearly off by heart but if you didn't its no problem. My favourite author.

Fabulous light read - humorous and brought to life by the author himself. Thoroughly enjoyed this and will be listening to more written and read by him.

    Story
"Delightful Yorkshire story, so absorbing !!"
What did you like most about The Little Village School?

All the characters, were easily recognized, the wit, and humour of the people and the innocent words of children, were a delight, and it was easy to visualise inside my minds eye, each individual, and recognize character traits, that dwell in every community. Also the humour, happiness and sadness within the story, made me, laugh, smile, yet also made me feel sad.

What does Gervase Phinn bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

As Gervase ,wrote the story, and was able to narrate it, he brings out , the way he interprets and gives you the characters, true to his writing, also the Yorkshire language and wit, is a joy to hear.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book brought out all the emotions , even when I was not listening to the story, afterwards ,I would recap the story, and chuckle away to myself, equally, the sad parts, brought out my empathy to the characters, that was going through life changing moments.

    Any additional comments?

Highly recommend this book to anyone, who likes Northern humour, language, and a really delightful book to listen too... now on to the next book.. Trouble at the Little village School .

    Story
"Mr. Phinn has done it again!"

I discovered Gervase Phinn back in 1998 when I was given a copy of The Other Side of the Dale to read by a fellow traveller on a coach holiday to Scotland. I was about 18 at the time and found both his storytelling and style to be enrapturing.

With the Little Village School series I have rediscovered just what a great writer he is and have been really impressed with his delivery in the audiobooks.

I still prefer a good book but when I'm driving or lounging about at night and trying not to wake my wife with a reading light, the audio editions are great. This is a touching and enjoyable story. One which you can imagine playing out in the real world.

    Thank you Gervase!
