"Kurt Vonnegut is probably the only narrator who could do justice to these selections." (AudioFile)
I was pleasantly surprised with this one. It reminded me of some wonderful moments reading his paperbacks in college. It might be a little confusing if you're not familiar with his work but it's probably still worth a try if you are thinking of "tasting" some Vonnegut.
If you've read the books already then this is great audio to hear Kurt Vonnegut talk about the books and about the story line briefly.
It would be more enjoyable if you were able to follow when one story stopped and the other began. I couldn't tell which story I was listening to and the stories were much summarized more than they were read line by line.
Kurt Vonnegut brings his own personal perspectives about each book rather than the books themselves. He even plays guitar and sings! This part is awesome. To get the authors point of view. However, if you download this audio file thinking you're going to hear the book, you are mistaken. It is Kurt reading some of the book and telling you about his experiences as an author surrounding those books.
The redeeming qualities were mentioned above in what Kurt brings to the book.
It should be noted somewhere in the description that this isn't really a reading of a book but more of Kurt Vonnegut's point of view as the author.
There are no chapter titles, nor does the reader identify which story they are about to begin reading. Makes no sense to provide no orientation to the listener in a collection of short stories.
Kurt Vonnegut is so witty and funny. Cheers me up every time I listen to it. The narrator is perfect for the audio.
A Man Without a Country and Breakfast of champions are just as entertaining, but if its your first Vonnegut audio buy this one first.
Kilgor Trout was /is my favorite character.
Funny, witty, not what I expected
this is my favorite book in my audio library and I own at least 30 audio books
I liked the way the author was able to articulate the stories in the manner directly linked to the intent of the words. I feel as though my interpretation of the stories is more accurate.
"Nobody reads Vonnegut like Vonnegut"
Please download this collection, it's amazing. Don't be put off by the fact that the version of Slaughter House 5 is highly abridged, or that you only get 3 stories from Welcome to the Monkey House. Vonnegurts pace, his reading voice and his singing make this an unforgettable treat. I recommend this to Vonnegurt fans even if you already have copies of all the stories being read in more complete forms by other people, nothing can match it. For those new to Vonnegurt or those starting to explore sci fi short stories this collection will fill up your imagination.
"his singing is priceless"
it was surely a lifesaver for me in desperate times (and will be in the future as well). i wish i knew how to speak of this more eloquently because i can't just say nothing. please let yourself have this experience, it is well worth 4 hours of your time on this planet. thank you
