Publisher's summary

International best-selling author Alexander McCall Smith delivers another delightful tale from his critically acclaimed No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series.

Precious Ramotswe's comfortable existence as the only detective in Botswana is suddenly rattled when the Satisfaction Guaranteed Detective Agency opens, and its brochure proclaims, "Don't take any chances! Entrust your enquiries to a MAN!" As if the development isn't enough, Mma Ramotswe has also taken on two difficult cases, one of which hits close to home. But with wisdom on her side, Mma Ramotswe figures to crack both cases and upstage her competition.

Critic reviews

"A dose of easy humor laces the pages, as McCall Smith throws in wry observations, effortlessly commenting on the vagaries his protagonist encounters as she negotiates Botswana bureaucracy. This is another graceful entry in a pleasingly modest and wise series." (Publishers Weekly)
"Lisette Lecat, a native South African, offers a near perfect narration...Lecat handles male voices exceptionally well, and her version of Mma Ramotswe is the definitive voice of that remarkable woman." (AudioFile)
"One of the most entrancing literary treats of many a year...A tapestry of extraordinary nuance and richness." (Wall Street Journal)

Easy Listening

Story line was alright. I enjoyed the Number 1. Ladies Detective Agency a lot more but this one was still good.

Another enjoyable book

This is my 4th of this series and I enjoyed it, but I feel like it's time to stop having also every character called by their full name all the time. I'll be doing these as filler between other books; I bought a bunch when they were on sale on Audible for $5 each. It was worth it. I've copied some parts of the past reviews to save time.

Precious Ramotswe is a Private Inspector and founder of the "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency". She has an assistant and that is where the typing school comes into play. The mysteries here are interesting and I loved this one because I could relate.

Although Alexander McCall Smith is a white man, he did grow up in the area and he seems to understand a lot about issues and traditions. I would like to see how some local people think about these books.

The narration is excellent and I look forward to the next book in the series.

My favorite book in this series

I've listened to all 17 novels in the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series in order released, but have reviewed only a few. All of the books are outstanding, but I like The Kalahari Typing School for Men most. Mma Ramotswe solves a couple of interesting cases, but the star of this novel is her secretary Mma Grace Makutsi. Grace decides that a typing school for men is badly needed in Botswana, so she starts one with her being the instructor. Was that really a good idea? Listen to find out. The incredible Lisette Lecat narrates and gives all characters, female and male, their own unique voice.

Wonderful people in a different culture.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I overheard a conversation by two attendees at the Utah Shakespeare Festival last summer. They were discussing their favorite series: The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. I had been looking for a new series to get into and this overheard recommendation seemed worth trying. They were right! Much to his amazement, my husband enjoys it too.

We like the people. They are real, they are funny and imperfect. The plot moves along nicely, but it's the people we like.

Mma Makutsi gets her turn

This book takes us into the life of Mma Makutsi. She seems like a person I want to feel sorry for, and then she opens her mouth, and I don't any longer. Well in this book, she truly comes into her own. She's strong, takes risks, and finds love.

I'm truly enjoying these books.
