What an amazing story...what a disappointing listen. The audio is available at level 2 only - a very poor level 2. The volume must be turned way up to hear what is being said, and even then, some of the words are obscure. I wanted to hear every word of this amazing story, and the audio quality prohibited that.
I love Amy Tan books, and this book is no exception, as for story and performance. However, the sound quality of the recording is so bad I can barely understand most of it, and I have to keep the volume much higher than I would like. I have had no difficulty with previous audible.com books, so I believe it must be a problem specifically with this title.
Sometimes hard to follow, but well worth the complex journey. Stay with it. The characters are remarkable in their believability. The going home again (to China) theme was an absolute stroke of genius and after listening to all the whispered stories along with the main character, I too felt a certain degree of home-coming. A magnificent story that manages to continually breathe a depth of life into seemingly mundane existences.
Say something about yourself!
I love Amy Tan as narrator. It is a shame that the quality of the recording is so bad. I read that the recording was poor in other reviews but did not heed the warning.
Not unless someone else narrated it. Great author but her voice gave me a headache.
I don't know because I could not go on listening after the narration grated on my nerves.
A slower read and lower pitch would help.
I was disappointed as I couldn't understand some of it, and couldn't go on listening.
I will be extremely careful to read others' comments before my next purchase.
I have admired Amy Tan's ability to draw me into another world for a long time. My favorite book is The Hundred Secret Senses. Listening to Amy Tan read her story is also fun because she can so effortlessly switch from an American accent to a Chinese one. But Audible's copy of this story is so horrible that I can't believe they made me pay nearly $20 for such a crappy download. This was not my first listen to this book. I used to check it out once in a while from my local library, and the 5 year old cassettes with maybe a 100 checkouts had better sound quality! Amy Tan sounds like she is reading from inside a paper bag. Audible.com should be embarrassed as I know that the initial production was fine.
All that aside - I love the story, I love Amy's reading, and I always thoroughly enjoy taking that trip to China with
If you decide to purchase and listen to this story, stay till the end. That is the best part. That's all I'll say :)
Amy Tan really makes you think. In this charming tale of two sisters it makes you appreciate your family and their deep seeded stories of love and values.
Amy Tan's narrating is just as I remember it as a child.
The audio quality of this recording is terrible! It sounds muffled and as if it is a recording of another recording. Such poor quality for $17 dollars!
I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing this one... sounds like it was recorded on a cell phone. Ugh.
I wish they'd go back and remaster the original recordings: this recording seriously at times sounds like the 'old days' of audiobooks where you borrowed a set from the library and the previous borrower had left the set out in the car so there was wavering distorted music at the beginnings of some of the tapes from that sun damage.
Which is a terrible shame: this is one of Amy Tan's best books in my opinion: a wonderful mix of Chinese and American culture with just a touch of supernatural that keeps you going. Amy Tan's narration is wonderful: Olivia, Kwan, and Simon are wonderfully portrayed, and Olivia herself speaks aloud many things that are unspoken about marriage than everyone wonders in the dark corners of their minds.
So, enjoy the book but be prepared to pump the audio and deal with bad quality of sound.
