Publisher's summary

A sanity-twisting Koontz classic about a traumatized woman and the terrifying place she might never escape.

“Koontz is brilliant.”–Chicago Sun-Times

Susan Thornton watched in terror as her lover died a brutal death in a college hazing. And in the four years that followed, the four young men who participated in that grim fraternity ritual also died violently—or so she thought.

Twelve years later, Susan wakes in a hospital bed. Apparently involved in a fatal accident, she can’t remember who she is or why she is there. All she knows is that her life is unfolding into a menacing nightmare—and that the faces that surround her, are those of the four men involved in that murder years ago.

Have the dead come back to life? Or has Susan plunged into the abyss of madness? With the help of her neuro-surgeon, she desperately clings to her sanity while fighting to uncover who—or what—could be coming for her.

Critic reviews

"The reading duo of Merlington and Foster is smooth together. First, they lull you into an almost peaceful state of mind, then they lower the boom - sending chills up your spine." ( AudioFile)

Different but limited Koontz

This novel has its moments, but was not my cup of tea. There was terror and violence, but it lacked the cleverness in the protagonist that I enjoy most in Koontz. The narration was good, the story acceptable, but the characters were forced by the story to be less well rounded than usual Koontz.

Really good story!

Great characters, only a tiny bit predictable, but still worth the listen! One snafu at the end I wish someone could answer for me, may have to email Dean himself 😂😂😂

good book bad narrator

i loved this story, but the woman who narrated it was terrible. way to over dramatic and over acting. She made Susan into a pathetic damsel in distress and not the strong intelligent woman I saw when first reading this book years ago.

Good, overall

There was a good hook in the beginning. However, the majority of the my middle of book was redundant and sluggish. The ending was good

Captivating and enjoyable. Catches you from the very beginning. The perfect mixture of supernatural & thriller.

Another great book by Dean Koontz

This is another great read, This has a lot of suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Also lookout for the twist at the end.

The Worst Koontz Story ever

Didn't care about the characters (kinda hoped she would be killed). Had to listen because I I already paid for it. Maybe I will exchange for something else.
