Publisher's summary

Robert E. Howard, renowned creator of Conan the Barbarian, was also a master at conjuring tales of hair-raising horror. In a career spanning only 12 years, Howard wrote more than 100 stories, with his most celebrated work appearing in Weird Tales, the preeminent pulp magazine of the era.

In this collection of Howard's greatest horror tales, some of the author's best-known characters - Solomon Kane, Bran Mak Morn, and sailor Steve Costigan among them - roam the forbidding locales of Howard's fevered imagination, from the swamps and bayous of the Deep South to the fiend-haunted woods outside Paris, to remote jungles in Africa.

Included in this collection is Howard's masterpiece "Pigeons from Hell", a tale of two travelers who stumble upon the ruins of a Southern plantation - and into the maw of its fatal secret. In "Black Canaan", even the best warrior has little chance of taking down the evil voodoo man with unholy powers - and none at all against his wily mistress, the diabolical High Priestess of Damballah. Also included is the classic revenge nightmare "Worms of the Earth" as well as "The Cairn on the Headland".

A good listen

I listened to this while at work and it had very good stories that kept me interested. the only downside, which the disclaimer warns, is that some stories are unfinished and just drops you.

and the narrator was incredible. very good range with the different voices and accents. A smooth sailing read through.

A Solid Collection

It's missing a few works, and the narration pauses awkwardly between story. Very solid overall.

Tails are good, ok, and others just end

Overall, this was a fun listening experience. I would recommend for anyone who likes wird tales and pulp action. Be warned that some of the stories just end with no resolution. This is do to the authors death.

Pulp horror from the master

In my opinion, Robert E Howard surpasses H P Lovecraft and must be considered the greater master of pulp horror yarns. Robertson Dean does a fine job of narrating and manages to breath life into the tales without getting in the way of the prose.

Good listen from a classic author

All over great performance from the narrator. I would have left out the unfinished stories. They are just enough to get you interested then they end leaving you feeling incomplete.

Interesting and captivating writing style!

Would you listen to The Horror Stories of Robert E. Howard again? Why?

I may listen to again simply because the stories are a bit hard to follow. It isn't that it's not narrated well, the writing of Howard is different and written back in the early 1900's. I would listen again because I'm sure I missed something.

What did you like best about this story?

There are a number of horror stories here. I liked the way these stories flow and the way they are written. They are more spooky then scary. Brooding I guess would be a fair description,

What about Robertson Dean’s performance did you like?

Well narrated and his voice fit perfectly. A stellar performance!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The man who turned werewolf.

Any additional comments?

This is a book written by a man who ironically killed himself when he found out his mother would not come out of a coma. His mother passes the day after Howard killed himself. This is an author who left way too soon and could have gone on to create many more works,

Racist as hell

If lovecraft was an out right racist, to which he was, than Robert e Howard must have been a card carrying KKK member

Chillingly Satisfying to Epic!

An epic anthology focused with Robert E Howard’s darker works of the horror genre, a chilling collection of stories and novellas from one of the most creative genius’s and influential Pioneers of the Fantasy/Horror/SiFi genre; the fruition of “Cosmic Fiction” coined by H.P. Lovecraft in regards to his own dark terrifying universe and his friends Robert E Howard’s; (they wrote each other constantly- archived historical captivating reading in of themselves and available to the public) For fans of the Lovecraftian Circle, this is a must have; period! Only disappointment- like so many Audible books, the chapters are acutely anemic missing the titles completely- only chapter numbers! This is a lazy very indifferent practice Audible! Stop it! Thank you! LoL. So, here is the title list courtesy of the Library of Congress and iPhone cut & paste!
