Publisher's summary

Kate and Nick Kavanaugh (lawyer and cop respectively) take in young Rainey Teague, whose parents have died under mysterious circumstances. Rainey is a handful. Well, actually, Rainey is turning out to be someone - or something - downright scary: a shape-shifting time-bending little boy who will have to resist being taken over by "Nothing." Will Kate and Nick be able to save him? Will the mirror they have kept up in the attic ultimately be their downfall? When more disappearances start to happen, where do they turn? No one can explain what is happening, but everyone knows that their sleepy, peaceful town, Niceville, is turning out to be anything but nice.

Airtight plot, masterful storytelling.

Wow. Do you like law enforcement books? The involvement of ex-military on both sides of the law? Cowboys and Indians? Supernatural thrillers? Books with strong but complicated marital relationships and the woven web of family ties? The Homecoming is all that and more. Any three or four of the dozen strong characters or any one or two of the complicated subplots could have made this a strong book. Stroud keeps more chainsaws in the air than any author I’ve ever read and he doesn’t drop a single detail. I’m in awe. (This is the middle book in a trilogy, be aware.)

Confusing

I really wanted to like this, but had a very hard time bonding with any of the characters. It was very difficult to follow the storyline and keep track of the characters. The story was kind of all over the place. By the time I had spent over 15 hours listening to this, I felt I had no clue as to what had just happened. :-( The narrator was excellent and I would listen to him again.
