Publisher's summary

Three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step.

Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid, Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.

Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her 17th white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.

Minny, Aibileen's best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody's business, but she can't mind her tongue, so she's lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own.

Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another.

This edition now includes the afterword "Too Little, Too Late—Kathryn Stockett in Her Own Words", as read by the author.

What a Five Star Performance

The writing is so descriptive you really feel that you are there. And you feel like you are in everyone's heart. The reading is truly a performance beyond compare, like a 40s radio show, but all done by the author??? Unbelievably entertaining. A work of art.

came to life in sound

this was a great listen. It explored the race relations in the 60's from both sides. I laughed at loud at some of Minnies antics and descriptions. For instance "it looked like a chicken coop on fire." and "she's so country corn is growing out of her shoes." Other revelations made you want to cry and are timeless such as the beatings Minnie just accepted from her spouse for so long and Miss Celia's repetitive miscarriages.
The different readers with their distinct voices and accents made each character really come alive for me.

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G, listen multiple times!

I listen to A LOT of audiobooks traveling for work and this hands down is one of two favorites (The Lovely Bones is my other). I have listened to this book at least 5 times and am again hitting play on my ipod. Besides the fact that the story is wonderful the narrorators are what make this book so good. I grew up in the South and never had an appreciation for the accent, but when I heard these three ladies voices it made me remember the melody and calm that can come w/ the dialect.
I ABSOLUTLEY RECOMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE!!!

Fantastic!!!

I had never really heard of this book to be honest prior to the theatrical release. I am an avid reader and had to read it, or listen to it, prior to viewing the movie. The story is fantastic. The narrators are perfect adding the right amount of individuality to each character so that they come to life in your mind as you listen to this amazing story. Definately a must have. This was an incredible story from the eyes of the help!!!

Amazing!

This is one of the best books I've ever listened to. Very interesting and keeps your attention. It kept me alert and awake during a very long road trip! I highly suggest listening to this, then go see the movie!
