Publisher's Summary

Three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step.

Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid, Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.

Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her 17th white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.

Minny, Aibileen's best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody's business, but she can't mind her tongue, so she's lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own.

Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

This edition now includes the afterword "Too Little, Too Late - Kathryn Stockett in Her Own Words", as read by the author.

What the Critics Say

"This heartbreaking story is a stunning debut from a gifted talent." (Atlanta Journal)

“It's graceful and real, a compulsively readable story of three women who watch the Mississippi ground shifting beneath their feet as the words of men like Martin Luther King Jr. and Bob Dylan pervade their genteel town. When folks at your book club wonder what to read next month, go on and pitch this wholly satisfying novel with confidence.” (Entertainment Weekly)

"[A] wise, poignant novel...You'll catch yourself cheering out loud." (People Magazine)

    "Loved It!"

This is absolutely one the best books I have listened to in a long time. The story is beautiful and heart wrenching at the same time. I hope Kathryn Stockett writes a sequel.

    "Fantastic, Heart Warming"

It pulled me into the book within minutes, it was wonderful, you become the characters, you see them, you are them. The readers are so very good, I recommend this book to all, especially if you live in the South like I do you can see how far we have come, it's just wonderful.

"The Help - Worth the listen!"

Great Story! Characters are well developed and believable. The book had to be a good read but the audiobook, with such great narration, brings the reader right into the middle of the story.

    "Disappointed it had to end!"

I read this book right after it was released, before I had even heard anything about it. I immediately told all fellow readers to read it. When I wasn't reading this book, I was listening to it...and vice-versa. I loved it. I thought the writing was terrific and the story a good one. I admired the strength of the women as well as their kindnesses and loyalty. I thought the production was terrific, and liked the different narrators. I read a lot of books and this will definitely be at the top of my list for a while.

    "Incredible!"

I thoroughly enjoyed The Help. As I listened to the story, I was tranported to Missippi during the early 1960s. I rank it as the best audio book in my library.

    "The Help is brilliant"

I absolutely adored this book. It was the best listen I have had in years. Some books are better read in print, this one is best heard. It was superbly narrated, the voices rich, the plot riveting. I was touched by it.

    "A True Masterpiece!"

Seldom does one find a novel with a wonderful combination of setting, plot, characters, and style. 'The Help' provides all of these. Add to this the rare combination of multiple narrators who have a wide range of accents, distinctive voices, and superb diction and you have the perfect narrated novel. Don't miss this one!

    "Better than reading it"

I loved this book and the characters. And it was better to listen to than to read it, because there were separate narrators for the different characters which made it seem like you were overhearing what they said. Loved every minute of it and was sad to have it end.
