Publisher's summary

The Perry family's new house is perfect - except for the weird behavior of the neighbors, and that odd smell coming from a dark corner in the basement. Pity no one warned the family about the house. Now it's too late. Because the darkness at the bottom of the basement stairs is rising.

Not sure how this got published without some kind of trigger warning.

The rape, suicide, pedophilia, and the description of a young girl getting sexually assaulted was too much and definitely needed a trigger warning. The end was terrible, I almost stopped listening after the last suicide but hoped it was a dream. Really disappointed

One foe King and Koontz fans

This is a combo of traditional ghost story and Stephen King. It is read marvelously well- with an ending that makes sense given the likability of the characters and the way they develop. It has an overriding message about personal sacrifice. It was extremely entertaining though graphically sexual and descriptively violent during some scenes. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes thriller suspense and ghost stories- fans of Dean Koontz and Stephen King will get a kick outta this.

I would be so mad if I wasted a credit on this

Let me start by saying that I really do love horror books. With Audibles Plus catalog it allows all of us to listen to more books at no additional cost. With that being said, I can see why this book is one of those books the publisher licensed for this "free" service.

I really don't know where to begin. The author seemed like he had a great premise. A haunted house. Yes it's been done a thousand times, but horror audiences in particular keep coming back to it. To the authors credit, this book starts out interesting, however, it looses momentum as the book continues. By the end of the book it is like the little engine that could. At least that's how I felt. I had to finish it, more out of curiosity and really nothing to do with being into it anymore. But let me say this, the ending was so boring and anti-climatic that I should have stopped way before reaching the end.

I don't want to give anything away, but the line "I'll get your lil wifey too" made me laugh. I don't know if that was intentionally supposed to sound like the wicked witch of the west or not, but it was ludacris either way. There was nothing scary about that whole interaction with the big bad, at all.

While I'm discussing dialogue. A lot of it sounded fake. Yes I know its a book and its all fake, but the conversations didn't sound like any conversations a real person would have. Not to mention the author forgot the first rule of trying to sell something. It is to avoid controversy and not show your opinions at all.

The politics injected in this is crazy. The author started with just casual "observations" to full out speeches attempting to pursued the audience to think they way he does. Yes I'm looking at the anit Wal-street speech, but that wasn't it. The author attacks teachers, immigration, there's even a whole chapter dedicated to the subject of how evil Colonialism was on native Americans.. you'd think with a list like this it was a political opinion book miscatagorized as a horror book. If I wanted politics I would have listened to a political book, not a horror book. Not to mention, wouldn't you want to try to sell this all over the world. Talk about a serious disconnect from the audience if they are not from the United States.

I don't know how most people feel about child pornagrophy. Two of the main characters are under 18. A son and daughter, and without being descriptive myself, the author is very explicit about minors, their bodies and sex. Especially the daughter and her under age friends. The easiest way to avoid this controversy was to just make them older, like college students, but the author specifically chose minors. Interesting choice given his selected subject matter.

Like my headline says. I'd be mad if I actually paid for this, but since I didn't I'm just annoyed I wasted my time on it.

Better than expected

The ol’ haunted house but has been pretty hashed out - let’s be real - so, I didn’t have any high expectations I picked this title mostly just to pass the time. Imagine my surprise when this was fairly original, suspenseful and engaging.
It’s still a haunted house story so don’t expect the wheel to be reinvented here, but it’s well thought out and written and genuinely scary.

Terrifying story of love and sacrifice

As graphically violent as this story is it has meaningful themes of love, sacrifice, and heartache. It's a classic tragedy with a modern theme. It's a definite must read or listen.

Mostly good but...

It’s a good book and very descriptive in both scary and sexual parts (beware the latter) but an “iPhone” plays a part in the story line and its corresponding timeline is not consistent with the stories timeline.

Specially, the phone originally appeared to be described and used in the way of an original iPhone (person had iPod and an iPhone) but timeline as described in the book would require a more recent iPhone model. Not a huge thing but kinda a nuisance since as I said, the phone plays a prominent role.

Ugh. Horrible story line

I was forcing myself through this story & only had an hour or two left. Couldn't do it as the story kept ambling on, never making a point.
Only ratcheting up the same over played fears it started with. Boring as hell.

I Would Give Zero Stars if Possible

I am a very open minded person. Thank goodness this was free because I would be upset if I had paid for this.

I stopped at seven hours left. It was very hard to get that far into it. It looked like it would be a good story. The sexually assaulting ghost was left out. This book really left me feeling dirty for listening to what I did.

It was gross, and I'm sad I wasted so much time on Ghost/adolescent inappropriate sexual encounters.

I love Bentley Little and the narrator Dan Butler.

I thought the entire book was well written and narrated. It kept me entranced throughout. From the tale of the main family in the story to the backstory. Or should I say the multiple backstories that made the whole of this tale so interesting to read! Great job all around!
