June 5, 1967: The fearsome, Soviet-equipped Egyptian Army and its 1000 tanks are massed on Israel's southern border. Meanwhile, the Syrian Army is shelling the much smaller nation from the north. Story
Gideon Zadok arrives in Israel with every intention to research a new book, mend a broken marriage, and improve his dysfunctional family. But as political tensions escalate and his family is evacuated, Zadok asks to follow Israeli paratroopers to secure Mitla Pass and finds himself in the midst of one of the largest global crises of the twentieth century. A sweeping novel of love, passion, and freedom, Mitla Pass stands as an epic look at modern Middle Eastern history and is quite possibly Uris’s most autobiographical work.

What is at the core of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? What does justice demand of us in this conflict? This audiobook clarifies an intimidatingly complex issue - and upends conventional views about America’s stake in it. In this audiobook, Elan Journo explains the essential nature of the conflict and what has fueled it for so long. What justice demands, he shows, is that we evaluate both adversaries - and America's approach to the conflict - according to a universal moral ideal: individual liberty.

In the grand storytelling style that is his signature, James Michener sweeps us back through time to the very beginnings of the Jewish faith, thousands of years ago. Through the predecessors of four modern men and women, we experience the entire colorful history of the Jews, including the life of the early Hebrews and their persecutions, the impact of Christianity, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition, all the way to the founding of present-day Israel and the Middle East conflict.

From the acclaimed author who enthralled the world with Exodus, Battle Cry, QB VII, Topaz, and other beloved classics of twentieth-century fiction comes a sweeping and powerful epic adventure that captures the "terrible beauty" of Ireland during its long and bloody struggle for freedom. It is the electrifying story of an idealistic young Catholic rebel and the valiant and beautiful Protestant girl who defied her heritage to join his cause. It is a tale of love and danger, of triumph at an unthinkable cost.

It was a time of crisis, a time of tragedy - and a time of transcendent courage and determination. Leon Uris’s blazing novel is set in the midst of the ghetto uprising that defied Nazi tyranny, as the Jews of Warsaw boldly met Wehrmacht tanks with homemade weapons and bare fists. Here, painted on a canvas as broad as its subject matter, is the compelling story of one of the most heroic struggles of modern times.

Originally published in 1953, Leon Uris’s Battle Cry is the raw and exciting story of men at war from a legendary American author. This is the story of enlisted men - Marines at the beginning of World War II. They are a rough-and-ready tangle of guys from America’s cities and farms and reservations. Led by a tough veteran sergeant, these soldiers band together to emerge as part of one of the most elite fighting forces in the world. With staggering realism and detail we follow them into intense battles - Guadalcanal and Tarawa.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

A New York Times Top 10 Book of the Year and National Book Award finalist, Pachinko is an "extraordinary epic" of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan (San Francisco Chronicle). In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant - and that her lover is married - she refuses to be bought.

Publisher's summary
Leon Uris retums to the land of his acclaimed best-seller Exodus for an epic story of hate and love, vengeance and forgiveness. The Middle East is the powerful setting for this sweeping tale of a land where revenge is sacred and hatred noble. Where an Arab ruler tries to save his people from destruction but cannot save them from themselves. When violence spreads like a plague across the lands of Palestine - this is the time of The Haj.

The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Great book!
I decided to buy this book after I read Exodus by Uris so I could learn more about the Arab point of view. I know this book is historical fiction, so I am counting on the events outlined in the book as being correct, however, it is hard to determine whether or not the book is prejudiced against the Muslim culture, without knowing a whole lot about it. From what I have heard on the news and I have learned in school about it, it does appear that there could be truth to Uris' portrayal of these people. It would seem the culture is fueled by anger and revenge, and is one in which this lifetime on earth is a throw-away in order to get to the better place after death. If the portrayal is accurate, it does explain a lot given what is going on in the world today.
I was somewhat surprised that I could connect with these characters in any way, but even with their foibles, Uris made them real and lovable people. The culture and traditions dictate so much of who they are. In the end, it is a tragic story about a family's struggle to survive in a world that suddenly changed and one that their culture would not allow them to accept. Even though I see their culture and traditions as being wrong compared to mine, I wonder how any of us would do if thrust into a situation like theirs?

This book changed my mind
This book lets you become part of the conflict and experience what it is like to placed into this environment. It is an astounding book.
The characters are very developed and you will know and feel as they do. And most importantly, you'll see the world from their perspective instead of the political perspective that has been injected from the media and politicians.
This book is not just well written, researched and historically accurate, it depicts the perspective of the Palestinian people.
Whether you agree or disagree with the politics, you cannot understand the politics until you empathize with the participants. That's what this book will allow you to do. You will be horrified. It is like watching a train wreck in slow motion. But you'll also be entranced and you'll not be able to quit listening.
When you're done, your political opinion will likely not change. But your understanding will probably change. This should be required reading. The book is amazing.

Deep stuff but worth reading
I have just finished The Haj. It was a hard book to listen to as it requires the reader to some familiarity
with the history of the Middle East over the last 100 years.
What I liked about the book was the author tried to explain why the Middle East is so dysfunctional. His examination of Middle Eastern culture and history creates a window for westerners to hopefully understand that the problems of the east can not be solved by us.
