Set in a world of extraordinary circumstances, filled with stunning visual imagery and unforgettable characters, The Dark Tower series is unlike anything you've ever heard. Here is Stephen King's most visionary piece of storytelling, a magical mix of fantasy and horror that may well be his crowning achievement. Don't miss the other volumes of Stephen King's The Dark Tower.

"Brilliant, fresh, and compelling...will leave you panting for more." (Booklist)
"An impressive work of mythic magnitude. May turn out to be Stephen King's greatest literary achievement." (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
Yes, I would recommend this title to a friend, but only for them to learn the background for the books that follow in the series. That was a review that I read, and I agree. I had trouble making it through this book. But I have enjoyed previous Stephen King books so much that I gave it a chance. Dark Tower I was not that great. But the series gets better. I don't really care for George Guidall reading, but I really like Frank Muller, who does The Dark Tower II, II, and IV.
I hoped for the story to get better.
I guess he did OK, but I don't really care for George Guidall. The first book that I heard him read, Everyman, I did not like. He became that character for me. Whenever I hear him, I think of that character.
Yes, because it was short, and gave me the background for the stories (books) that followed.
A mysterious man in a mysterious world. You learn about both, as the story unfolds, in a way that makes you want to know more - engaging dialog, revealing flashbacks, and nail biting action. And George Guidall brings it to life with top notch narration.
It was ok, but very hard to get into.
Not listen to the other ones
I didn't enjoy the narrator's overly dry reading, and i didn't particularly like the book.
Not having read or listened to anything else in the series, i am hesitant to say.
Not familiar with enough narrators to comment
It could make a very good franchise. I really want to see Josh Holloway as Roland.
Again, i haven't read anything else in the series, and it may take me a while to get around to it given this sluggish, taxing book.
It depends on if you would rather listen or read.
In its own class
going through the tunnel
I expected the darkness but was surprised at the character development. I did find it a challenge sometimes to follow the progress of the story.
I have read the second book and will complete the series.
George Guidall is one of my top five favorite narrators, he manages to inhabit characters and I always feel he is invested in the story, not just telling it.
Since this is part of a series and King has such a huge fan base, I think it would be a challenge much like trying to put Gabaldon on the screen. But I do think it would be a great TV miniseries.
I was pleasantly surprised by King, my experience of him had only been the movies of
The Shining and Carrie. While this is a dark fantasy with about the amount of violence I expected, I did become involved in wanting to know what would happen next and how the relationships would resolve. I listened to 11-22-63 between the first and second books and loved that so I have added King to my list of authors to search when I'm ready for something new.
The Gunslinger is in the top 10 audiobooks I have listened to.
Roland was the ultimate Knight after his time has gone.
He was very clear and placed the inflections where they should be in each sentence as King intended.
Jake he was an instantly likable character ... You knew he was going to die, but you still didn't want it to happen.
If ever you wondered how good Stephen King is as an Author, Start here and believe me, you will continue til Roland reaches the Dark Tower and then you will want to live it with him again...... and again.
I love to listening to George Guidall
It left me wanting to know more. Of course there are several more installments to come.
It's shorter by comparison but this is just the beginning of the story.
In Search of the Devil
I greatly need to hear the next installment. Can't wait to get it.
