The Gunslinger: The Dark Tower I | [Stephen King]

The Gunslinger: The Dark Tower I

Eerie, dreamlike, set in a world that is weirdly related to our own, The Gunslinger introduces Roland Deschain of Gilead, of In-World that was, as he pursues his enigmatic antagonist to the mountains that separate the desert from the Western Sea in the first volume of The Dark Tower series. Roland, the last gunslinger, is a solitary figure, perhaps accursed, who with a strange single-mindedness traverses an exhausted, almost timeless landscape of good and evil.

Publisher's Summary

Eerie, dreamlike, set in a world that is weirdly related to our own, The Gunslinger introduces Roland Deschain of Gilead, of In-World that was, as he pursues his enigmatic antagonist to the mountains that separate the desert from the Western Sea in the first volume of The Dark Tower series. Roland, the last gunslinger, is a solitary figure, perhaps accursed, who with a strange single-mindedness traverses an exhausted, almost timeless landscape of good and evil. The people he encounters are left behind, or worse, left dead. At a way station, however, he meets Jake, a boy from a particular time (1977) and a particular place (New York City), and soon the two are joined, khef, ka, and ka-tet. The mountains lie before them. So does the man in black and, somewhere far beyond...the Dark Tower.

Set in a world of extraordinary circumstances, filled with stunning visual imagery and unforgettable characters, The Dark Tower series is unlike anything you've ever heard. Here is Stephen King's most visionary piece of storytelling, a magical mix of fantasy and horror that may well be his crowning achievement. Don't miss the other volumes of Stephen King's The Dark Tower.

"so-so, just not for me i guess"

I thought it was fine, just a little draggy and not really to my tastes. I do like some Stephen King novels, but not all. (The Stand is one of my all time favorites.) But this just wasn't for me.

    "King in his finest form!"

This story was written by King way back in the 80's. It's one of his best, and introduces Roland Deschaine, the Gunslinger. Roland tells tales of his life to Jake, a boy from our world, whom he meets in the desert and decides to take along with him on his quest for Martin, "the man in black." It's set in our post-apocalyptic world, or another world just like ours that co-exists where time has 'moved on.' Like I said, it's one of his best! Well worth the credit!

    "Epic!!"

Ever since I listened to this book I've been hooked on the Dark Tower series. It's a great story and is read very well by George Guidall. I recommend this to anyone that enjoys a good adventure.

    "Completely enthralling!"

I listened to this nonstop for two days and finished it. Was simply amazing. I listened to it again on the way back from South Carolina with my girlfriend. She loved it as well.

The narrator couldn't be better. The story is so full of detail about the gunslinger world and every character is brought alive in the fullest possible way by the narrator.

I am on book 2 and listened to just a brief minute of it and cannot understand why they switched narrators when Frank Muller is so amazing already. I cannot wait til the later books when he comes back to read. It seems sort of jarring to get used to the gunslinger sounding a certain way and then to change it.

Nevertheless I am totally hooked to this series right now and you should definitely check it out!

    "Great Listen"

As boring as this book was, when compared to King's others, I really enjoyed it. I actually can't wait to start the second one now. This series definitely has potential...

"A unique adventure that keeps you guessing!"

This is actually only the second Stephen King book I've read/listened to, but with the depth of planning and the universe he's weaving in this first book of the Dark Tower series, I'm dying to listen to the rest. The best I can say is it is a splendid hybrid of chivalric intentions and western gunslingers - the world is extraordinarily explained through King's story mechanisms and brings about a weird psuedo-familiarity with genre that keeps you engaged and pondering what actually is happening the whole time. Flawed heroes, dark choices and the hero's unswerving devotion to his cause brings forth a adventure you can't wait to unveil throughout the reading.

    "The Gunslinger gets you hooked..."

This is a great introduction into the world of The Dark Tower series. I have tried to start this series before, but had little time to read it. I finished the audio book in two sittings and was ready for more. I bought the remainder of the series and can't wait to resume the story!

"The 1st but not the best"

If you can make it through this book you are in for a great ride. An all time great epic with a poor start.

Be patient and read the 2nd book before you give up.
