Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: If you've seen the Tom Hanks movie, you know this is a great story. But do yourself a favor and listen to it. Frank Muller, chosen to narrate by King himself, turns each character into flesh and blood with the pitch and pacing of his voice. I spent a Saturday with my headphones on because I couldn't turn off the story before finishing it. (I apologize for my rudeness to the person who called me that afternoon. You couldn't have known that I was dealing with life and death issues.) — Beth Anderson

Publisher's summary

Hear this history-making serial novel - from cliffhanger to cliffhanger - in its entirety. When it first appeared, one volume per month, Stephen King's The Green Mile was an unprecedented publishing triumph: all six volumes ended up on the New York Times best seller list - simultaneously - and delighted millions of fans the world over.

Welcome to Cold Mountain Penitentiary, home to the Depression-worn men of E Block. Convicted killers all, each awaits his turn to walk the Green Mile, keeping a date with "Old Sparky," Cold Mountain's electric chair. Prison guard Paul Edgecombe has seen his share of oddities in his years working the Mile. But he's never seen anyone like John Coffey, a man with the body of a giant and the mind of a child, condemned for a crime terrifying in its violence and shocking in its depravity. In this place of ultimate retribution, Edgecombe is about to discover the terrible, wondrous truth about Coffey, a truth that will challenge his most cherished beliefs...and yours.

Best King story

This story has replaced The Shining as my favorite all time Stephen King story. The characters, drama, emotion, and excitement was fabulous. I truly loved and was touched by this one.

Amazingly captivating

I always loved the movie, but after finally listening to the book, I love it so much more. Stephen King is my favorite author, and having devoured his books on audible, I wonder why it's taken me this long to do this book, great narration as well probably my favorite narrator

Absolutely Perfect.....

I'm a fan of Stephen King and have read or listened to most of his work. This was excellent. The story, the narration, and the author are at top form here. I'd certainly rate this in my top 10 audiobooks of the over 1000 I've listened to over the years and definitely in my top 3 King books.
Even if you've seen the movie, it's good to revisit old friends here. Big John Coffy (same as the drink but not spelled the same), Paul, Brutus, Percy, and of course Mr. Jingles on the Green Mile.
The narrator brings it all to life and really draws you into the story.
5 stars, since there's no higher rating.....

wonderful story. questionable audio quality

I thought the book was very good. Incredibly sad at many points heartbreaking even. the problem that I do have is a problem that I'm having with a lot of audible books. in this version particularly I could hear an echo of everything the narrator was saying. in other books I can hear telephones being answered in the background conversations and other such things. like I'm not the most technologically savvy but isn't there a way to clean this stuff up? but if you want a good story man this touches you deep.

I've always been a king fan but hadn't gotten around to reading this masterpiece until now. I'll be coming back to it in the near future.
