Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: If you've seen the Tom Hanks movie, you know this is a great story. But do yourself a favor and listen to it. Frank Muller, chosen to narrate by King himself, turns each character into flesh and blood with the pitch and pacing of his voice. I spent a Saturday with my headphones on because I couldn't turn off the story before finishing it. (I apologize for my rudeness to the person who called me that afternoon. You couldn't have known that I was dealing with life and death issues.) — Beth Anderson

Publisher's summary

Hear this history-making serial novel - from cliffhanger to cliffhanger - in its entirety. When it first appeared, one volume per month, Stephen King's The Green Mile was an unprecedented publishing triumph: all six volumes ended up on the New York Times best seller list - simultaneously - and delighted millions of fans the world over.

Welcome to Cold Mountain Penitentiary, home to the Depression-worn men of E Block. Convicted killers all, each awaits his turn to walk the Green Mile, keeping a date with "Old Sparky," Cold Mountain's electric chair. Prison guard Paul Edgecombe has seen his share of oddities in his years working the Mile. But he's never seen anyone like John Coffey, a man with the body of a giant and the mind of a child, condemned for a crime terrifying in its violence and shocking in its depravity. In this place of ultimate retribution, Edgecombe is about to discover the terrible, wondrous truth about Coffey, a truth that will challenge his most cherished beliefs...and yours.

Not your normal King Book

Despite not being your normal I’d have to say this is my favorite of his books so far.

Death Row

I was surprised to see this was another Stephen King movie and Audible book. the gunslinger King came up with an interesting way to see hope and redemption on death row.

Superb

Stephen King once said that when Frank Muller reads, "the blind will see, the lame will walk, and the deaf will hear."
He wasn’t kidding..... fantastically told, wonderfully written and a story that will stay with you forever! ❤️

Stephen King at his best

I think my title pretty much sums it up, but I think I'll expand on it. This is a skillfully told tale with heart, humor, horror, character and, yes, boatloads of suspense. King took Dickens as his model in crafting this novel, and that's evident in its episodic nature with brief recaps at the beginning of each part. It's also evident in the book's social concerns. Systemic racism and our flawed criminal justice system are crucial elements here, but subtextually. There are no lectures, but it's a flavor, a malevolence as subtle as the magic. Neither King nor the narrator tell you what to think, but you walk away with certain feelings nonetheless. Also, you kind-of have to hand it to him for making some very guilty death row inmates sympathetic figures. I was on the verge of tears before and during Eduard Delacroix's execution. His unabashed love of Mr. Jingles really won me over. That's not to say that there aren't evil characters. Percy Wetmore and Willam "Wild Bill" Wharton are, for my money, among King's most frightening creations. Partly because, as Americans, many of us know or have heard of such depraved psychopaths. They scared me more than Pennywise, the Crimson King and the Overlook Hotel all rolled into one. The Green Mile is among King's best.

As ALWAYS, a MASTERPIECE..

A story that wakes a person up and makes you think. And as ALWAYS, a masterpiece. You can not be good at just 1 thing. Stephen King proves that again with this novel.

A totally involving story !!

Having seen the movie of the Green Mile, so many times now that my wife rolls her eyes when I'm caught watching it, I had of course had to check out the book it came from. And it was a delight also. Frank Muller made it come to life with his narration so well that that at time it was as if Tom Hanks was reading it. He got the voices right and the feelings he engendered with his telling, brought the characters alive just as well as the movie. So well, that I finished it in three sittings. Also, this audio version, like the book, filled in the missing information that the movies often have to leave out for flow or time. It fleshed out the movie in my mind and will make the movie, as I watch it yet again, more complete. Well worth a listen of a great story.

Slow and steady burn.

Excellent book. Don’t expect and major climax, however, if you liked the movie, you will enjoy this. The narration was excellent!

King

I’ve always thought King was a horror story writer. Well what did I know? I’ve read IT and The Shinning and both scared the snot out of me.
I came across this book which I’ve known about from the movie and there was Kings name on it. I had no idea. This book is really fantastic! The characters, the descriptions. All so good.
I am making my husband listen.

Incredible.

This isn't just one of King's best, but one of the best stories you'll ever read, period. You'll go through it more than once, too. Even if you've already seen the film production - or perhaps especially if you have - give this book a go. Both the novel and the movie stand well on their own merits, neither overshadows the other; they're both brilliant.

Frank Muller is a trusty voice across several King audio productions, too.
