Unpopular opinion.
A great story of survival and perseverance under amazingly difficult conditions. A story of the immense power of nature and of the human mind. A story of life. But I have heard this is Anne Heche’s best performance. Not to speak ill of the dead, but she was NOT a good audiobook reader. Her tone was extremely monotonous and her voice acting quite weak. Audiobooks need to use REAL readers and voice actors and not screen actors playing at it.

Not your typical Steven King book.
I listened to this book because Anne Heche reads it. She does a spectacular job bringing life to the King's words. Stephen King has a beautiful way of writing for children and Anne Heche took those words and brought them home. I highly recommend this book.

Enjoyed all but a single word
Good story and the narration by Anne Heche was mostly fine, though I thought the sound quality was a bit lacking. One pet peeve: as one who grew up in Appalachia, the name of these mountains is pronounced “Apple-La-Chin” NOT “Apple-Lay-Chin”. I took a star off of this performance for having to hear this word mispronounced repeatedly throughout the recording.

This audiobook suffers from bad audio production. If I hadn't been listening at 2.5x speed, the gaps between chapters would have driven me crazy.

EXCELLENT READ!!
This book is amazing! This is one of my all time favorite Stephen King books. If you liked books like stand by me or The Green Mile you'll love this book. Nothing supernatural in it, its just a great story.

Good Narration
I don't think the narration could have been any better. I was very impressed with the job Ann Heche did. I was caught up in the story and holding out hope that she would make it out. As always, Mr. King draws it out as long as possible, but by the end you have a very clear picture of his intent.

Loved it
I've read this book three times in the past twenty years or so and bought it for family members as gifts. One of Stephen King's best works. I was hypnotized. Flawless!
