Lad from the streets meets lord of the manor. Both men's lives will be changed forever.
When Sir Alan Watleigh goes searching for sex, he never imagines the street rat he brings home for one last bit of pleasure in his darkest hour will be the man who hauls him back from the edge of the grave. Despite his harsh life in the slums of London, Jem is a bright, cheerful young man. He's also witty, irreverent, glib, and makes Alan laugh - a rare occasion since wartime trauma and the death of his family have made the man a ghost of his former self.
A single night of meaningless sex turns into an offer of permanent employment. Jem acts as Alan's valet, but offers him so much more than polished boots and starched cravats. Just as the men are adjusting to their new living arrangement, news about a former soldier under his command sends Sir Watleigh and Jem on the road to save a child in danger.
The journey brings them closer together as they travel from lust toward love. They rescue the girl from the clutches of an insane surgeon, who is as interested in experimenting on the vulnerable human spirit as he is on physical bodies. Alan realizes his love for Jem when he nearly loses him, but is Alan's love strong enough to risk society discovering the truth about him? And is he strong enough to finally accept his sexual nature?

This story has everything!
A brooding, principled, handsome hero who struggles with his wounds and needs.
A delicious, unfettered young man who's wit and beauty barely disguise his wisdom and depth of character.
A sadistic and perverse villain who is in possession of a little girl needing rescuing.
And a lot of ROMANCE with very EROTIC love scenes!
This is a beautifully written love story. It would make any reader sigh with giddiness by the end. It is, obviously, a gay romance. But I wish it were listed next to all the other Historical Romances. More people need to hear it.
Yay for love!!
Other reviewers may not have liked the narrator, but I enjoyed him very much.
I really enjoyed this sweet story. It is a MM historical story similar to Brook St Thief. The relationship that builds between the MCs is realistic and endearing. Both MCs try to be find their own self worth in the love of the other. The narrator does a fantastic job.
I really enjoy the world of books! Narration just add layers to that world... don't u think? :)
I just can't get into this. This is just boring to me. It started off good..but the slow drawl of the narrator just didn't do it for me. He tried too hard to may it fit the period. Then it got boring and I just stopped.
I've listened to this book twice and it is my favorite gay romance book. it's further completely brought Alive by one of the best audio book readers I've ever listened to. it's very moving, it's thrilling, it's suspenseful, and it's very erotic.
The constant switching between character voices for narrated bits was confusing. Sometimes it would take me a whole passage to realize a character hadn't been speaking out loud. Also, the bits w the villain were just too off-putting. I was already having trouble getting into the romantic scenes due to awkward wording & then having the surgeon go into detail about his intentions toward a young child just ruined the rest of this, for me.
I believe our character Sir Alan got a lot more then he paid for in Jem and they are a likable duo. This is a nicely written book with a good story about M/M opposites attracting and the era they are living in. The narrator did a great job. It does lag a bit in the middle, the sex/romance was good and the suspense during the end kept my attention.
I however base my recommendation on if it's a story I would listen to again. This one I will not. Let's just call it a slow ride, maybe worth your free credit or at a discount which is why I got it.
Fun loving, free spirited guy, who loves reading or better still, being read to!
Something here for everyone except the homophobic. Good characters good story good read!
I do love historical romance fiction

the narrator performance. Very dry , no feeling.
I love how good this two are for each other.
Put some feeling and passion or love in to the reading.
I loved this book on print , disappointed with how the audio came out.
i like the time period and genre
made the feeling and characters more connectible by seeming more believable and real.
feeling, emotion, sincerity
had such high hopes and just didn't live up to them
No idea, I haven't read the print version.
Jem, he was sweet and cheeky
The different voices for the characters
There's quite a tense scene towards the end.
