Publisher's summary

They were the leaders, the men who made the decisions that change the outcome of battles... and the fate of continents. From the awesome landing at Normandy to the torturous campaigns of the South Pacific, from the frozen hills of Korea to the devastated wastes of Dien Bien Phu, they had earned their stars. Now they led America’s finest against her most relentless enemy deep in the jungles of Southeast Asia. It was a new kind of war, but the Generals led a new kind of army, ready for battle - and glory....

Critic reviews

“A major work... magnificent... powerful. If books about warriors and the women who love them were given medals for authenticity, insight and honesty, The Brotherhood of War would be covered with them.” (William Bradford Hule)

Veteran of the brotherhood of war

I joined the US Military in 1960 and retired in 1990. I was an Army aviator in Vietnam. Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, 26 awards of the Air Medal. Between my brother and I spanned the entire period of service from the Constabulary in Germany through the Vietnam war. We were aware of, a party to, or participant in essentially all of the major events of this series. I loved these books as they told the story of this period of my life in very personal terms and brought back events of my career in very believable and and very enjoyable form.

Soap opera for men

I have really enjoyed this series by W. E. B. Griffin. The character development is great and the narrator, Eric G Dove is very good. This entire series has been like a soap opera for men. I find myself getting attached to some characters and not liking others. There is plenty of military action but there is also some of the day to day stuff that happens in life. The descriptions of the day to day life in the military is very accurate and the details are spot on. The narrator gets most of his terminology right and keeps his characters in their unique style of voice throughout the series. If you're a military history buff or just looking for a good series to start give this one a try.

Incredible

This series of books are some of the best I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. Being a combat veteran I form close bonds with some of the characters within. Long before audible I was a fan of W.E.B. Griffin’s paper books and have read this series several times. I own a copy of all of them in paperback and some of them have traveled all over the world with me. The narration was done very well also. Thanks audible for keeping these great reads alive and thank you W.E.B for so many hours of laughter, tears and enjoyment.

The series “jumps the shark”

This book read more like an author’s contractual obligation, rather than the next chapter in military life. Like the previous book, there was a rush to finish the book in the last 10-15 minutes, as if the FedEx guy was standing in the doorstep, tapping his foot, waiting for Griffin to stuff the shipping envelope with the final draft.

Great book

I really enjoyed this book. Other than a couple of factual errors (for example, C5As could not been involve in Operation Monte Christo in 1969 since first one did not enter regular service until 1970. But that’s just the nerd in me), I loved the details he provides.

I did note considerable similarities between Lt. Col Lowe from this series and Lt. Col. Charlie Castillo from the Presidential Agent series. I wonder if that was intentional.

Great Series

Throughly enjoyed the series!!

Truly wonderful character development and lots of very accurate military nomenclature.

I appreciated the vignettes about Viet Nam as a combat veteran of that War and former UH-1 Huey pilot.

One of the Best in the Series

Griffin brings his story into the Nixon Administration in what is one of the most exciting books of the series. The Green Berets have been tasked with making a raid on Vietnam with the purpose of liberating American POWs but their effort to do so is plagued by security breaches that threaten the entire mission. Griffin does an excellent job of showing three types of security threats here. Many are well-intentioned patriotic men trying to get in on the action, some are clever patriotic women who figure out what is happening from their husbands’ involvement, and at least one is an anti-war activist who happens to be the son of Craig Lowell (and wasn’t that confrontation a wonderfully emotional scene—son rejecting everything the father stands for and believes in). All in all, this is the most gripping book in the series, although I would have liked to see the actual mission get about 300 more pages devoted to it. Lowell, MacMillan, Felter, and Parker have grown up and matured into very fine officers, although Lowell still can’t keep his pants zipped and it gets him into trouble again. (Honestly, this has been a plot of every book in the series. Lowell sleeps with every female that moves and it gets him in trouble.) And of course, at least one person we have followed from book one dies making the plot even more gripping.

I think Griffin intended this to be the last book in the series because he does an interesting “this is what happened to everyone” section at the end of the book. As there are three more books in the series, I find myself wondering if we will go back to the years he glossed over during the Johnson Administration to find something for them to do.
