Publisher's summary

A foundling, an old book of dark fairy tales, a secret garden, a maze, an aristocratic family, a love denied, a mystery - The Forgotten Garden is a captivating, atmospheric, and a compulsive listen about the past, ghosts, family, and memories from best-selling author Kate Morton.

Thirty-eight year old Cassandra is lost, alone, and grieving. Her much loved grandmother, Nell, has just died and Cassandra, her life already shaken by a tragic accident 10 years ago, feels like she has lost everything known and dear to her.

But an unexpected and mysterious bequest from Nell turns Cassandra's life upside down and ends up challenging everything she thought she knew about herself and her family. Inheriting a book of dark and intriguing fairytales written by Eliza Makepeace Rutherford - the Victorian authoress who disappeared mysteriously in the early 20th century - as well as a cliff-top cottage on the other side of the world, Cassandra takes her courage in both hands to follow in the footsteps of Nell, on a quest to find out the truth about their history, their family and their past; little knowing that in the process, she will also discover a new life for herself.

Critic reviews

"This debut page-turner...recounts the crumbling of a prominent British family as seen through the eyes of one of its servants....Morton triumphs with a riveting plot, a touching but tense love story and a haunting ending." ( Publishers Weekly)

Loved it!

Almost 21 hours of pleasure! That's what I thought when I bought this book, and I was correct. I did not want this to end. Even though The Lake House is still my favorite one by Kate Morton, I loved this one. I loved Caroline Lee 's performance. She is very natural in her performance.

Again, this is a five star writing, five star narrating. I know I will listen to this book again and again.

Multifaceted and enthralling

Filled with suspension, intrigue, love and longing. Woven together as colors of a beautiful quilt.

Couldn't stop

What a nice surprise. I have listen to 17 books this summer and non of them held my Argentina like this one did. Loved all of the different inner weaving story lines. Look forward to listening to another one from her.

Not a predictable Story!

Loved it. Very intense! Enjoyed the voice of the narrator.

This book has all the elements of romance, mystery, loneliness, love,
control, genealogy, sadness, beauty. Unable to predict the ending.

I added this based on the reviews, happy I did so.

Well written, well read. Not the usual story I would have added but the reviews intrigued me. A twisting tale reminds me of "Life Itself". I listen to books on tape while making rugs and sewing. I did not mind the back and forth timeline, like putting a jigsaw together everything is picture perfect in the end. A refreshing approach to a mystery for me .No spoilers here.

New Author for me!

I will search and find more from her.
Truly enjoyed this one. Much more than I expected,
The twists and turns in each chapter kept me listening. I felt as thought I knew the answer to the
Who done it and was always off.
Admittedly I picked up as early in the morning as I could, then only stopped it when I couldn’t stay awake. I’m looking for Kate’s next book now!!!!
Listen on! Listen on!

Intricately woven tale

The narrator had a pleasing voice and accent, so I enjoyed the whole 20-hour journey. The story line explores the events of three generations in several continents. I'm anxious to listen to more of her works.
