Audible Editor Reviews

Perhaps his best book, The Fog is James Herbert's terrifying thriller where contact with a mysterious fog turns the most innocent of people into homicidal maniacs. Given an extra dose of tension from the sly and gravelly voice of veteran narrator Sean Barrett, the poor folks in little Wiltshire don't stand a chance. The menacing and uncontrollable fog takes over, leaving the town of Wiltshire devastated and on the hunt for more victims. James Herbert is at his prime here and when paired with the dramatic performance from Sean Barrett, The Fog is an audiobook not to be missed.

Publisher's Summary

The peaceful life of a village in Wiltshire is suddenly shattered by a disaster which strikes without reason or explanation, leaving behind it a trail of misery and horror. A yawning, bottomless crack spreads through the earth, out of which creeps a fog that resembles no other. Whatever it is, it must be controlled; for wherever it goes it leaves behind a trail of disaster as hideous as the tragedy that marked its entry into the world. The fog, quite simple, drives people insane.

What the Critics Say

"Herbert was by no means literary, but his work had a raw urgency. His best novels, The Rats and The Fog, had the effect of Mike Tyson in his championship days: no finesse, all crude power. Those books were best sellers because many readers (including me) were too horrified to put them down." (Stephen King)

"There are few things I would like to do less than lie under a cloudy night sky while someone read aloud the more vivid passages of Moon. In the thriller genre, do recommendations come any higher?" (Andrew Postman, The New York Times Book Review)

"Herbert goes out in a blaze of glory." (Daily Mail)

Not what I was looking for in a story. There were parts I really enjoyed, I just didn't care for the overall story. Just ok for me. I will give the author one more try.

If you’ve listened to books by James Herbert before, how does this one compare?

Both of the books by Herbert I've listened have been very stock material, which while enjoyable, does not seem to add anything to the genre.

Do you think The Fog needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

    No.

I thought that this story was going to be more like the movie. I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't. It was not what I expected but was worth it!

    "I lost interest"

This book has some creepy and interesting ideas, but it really fell short. The story did not pull me in and I lost interest rather quickly. Every once in a while, something interesting happened, but overall something was missing. I did not care what happened to the characters and could barely get myself to pay attention to the last chapter - no matter how many times I replayed it and tried to tune in. I love horror, but it must grip the reader and not let go! This book was a disappointment for me.

Would you try another book from James Herbert and/or Sean Barrett?

From James, i don't think so... i did not like this book.
    Sean, perhaps.

What could James Herbert have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

For me it was a little to sciencey. I prefer my evil to be supernatural or psychopathic. sure people turned insane but only from the fog.

How could the performance have been better?

It was not that the performance was bad, i liked his voice and he did a good job...I just did not like him for this kind of book.

    Any additional comments?

I think the problem for me was that it simply was not MY kind of horror.

Where does The Fog rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is currently in my top 10 audiobooks.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Other than the hero, there were many characters that I warmed to but one who stood out above the rest was young Mavis. Having been left by her lover and childhood friend, Ronnie, she feels she has no where to turn, except to end it all.

Which character – as performed by Sean Barrett – was your favourite?

I felt Sean Barrett read many of the roles very well. The changes in his voice, even in duologues the difference in characters stood out.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There are many scenes of The Fog, and the characters' stories that you can't help but want to reach out to but, one of the funniest scenes I have read in any book is the one with Edward Smallwood and the policeman.

    Any additional comments?

The whole layout of The Fog gives an air of mystery. Long before the earthquake strikes releasing the mysterious gas that would eventually take out the south of England town by town. Is there no stopping The Fog?

What did you like most about The Fog?

Gripping story that mad me drag out my car journeys to keep listening, some drives were in the evening fog so added to the experience.

If you’ve listened to books by James Herbert before, how does this one compare?

Runs along at the same pace as other Herbert books, building the suspense brilliantly. As always builds the characters well.

What about Sean Barrett’s performance did you like?

Kept the suspense going with a good performance and handled the many characters well. Giving the main character a true voice and personality

"A book that I'll be deleting from my library."

Judging by the reviews this book and the author are obviously very popular. I just found it unnecessarily crude, this is my opinion. I wasn't expecting an Enid Blyton story but some parts of The Fog are just sick. There wasn't a need for such graphic sexual and violent descriptions in order to carry the story.
The narrator does his job very well, clearly spoken, can't fault him. That said, I will be deleting this recording. These recordings really should have some type of rating as I would recommend it aught to be an 18+.
