Publisher's summary

Nicola Marter was born with a gift. When she touches an object, she sometimes glimpses those who have owned it before. When a woman arrives with a small wooden carving at the gallery Nicola works at, she can see the object’s history and knows that it was named after the Firebird - the mythical creature from an old Russian fable.

Compelled to know more, Nicola follows a young girl named Anna who leads her into the past on a quest through the glittering backdrops of the Jacobites and Russian courts, unearthing a tale of love, courage, and redemption.

Some of my absolute favorite storytelling

I have read and reread most of her books, but something about the Slains series really gets me in all the good spots. The attention to detail, the heartbreak, the slow burn and the mostly happy endings... it's amazing.

I love how it ties into the winter sea, the way the past and present are tied together is brilliantly done as well!

Boring

This book was just boring. I love urban fantasy but this plot just meandered along with nothing particularly interesting happening. Could not finish.

So happy I found Suzanna Kearsley

I stumbled into Susanna’s writings and I am happier for it. I love the back-and-forth in time maintaining the two stories. Can’t wait to listen to more. I actually looked up king James today just to learn how his story ended. I will be looking to find more of the story through Susanna’s hand. If not, I’m sure the next story will be just as good.

great story

Loved this story. My 2nd book by this author and plan to read more. Talented narrator and does accents very well. My only issue is a personal one as I didn't like how she made some of the characters sound like they were serious and thoughtful all of the time as that's not how I perceived them to sound. Minor complaint though. I really enjoyed this story!

Great Story

I loved this book. There are two love stories being told at the same time. It wraps historical romance during the 1715 rebellion with a more current look at love and relationships. The historical portion of the book was well researched. Anna finally learns that things are not always as they appear. She is able to finally follow her heart rather than her pragmatic mind. She has the potential of a happily ever after. In current times, Nicola finally accepts who she really is without worries of what other people will think of her. Her grandfather made her so afraid to embrace who she really is that it takes a lot for Nicola to finally be herself. Nicola is also finally open to her real feelings and able to embrace love. I liked Rob the best. He is confident, patient and at times sneaky. He knows the entire journey for the firebird is really about his relationship with Nicola. Fun read. It is worth a credit.

Very good!

Loved the narrator. Amazing voice and accents. Story was a little slower than some of Kearsley's but still enjoyable. U

Listened to This Years Ago

...and I remember not liking it but I could not remember why - so I listened to it again. This is an example of listening to something during an unreceptive time - maybe sleeping through some of it?

This was a very different type of historical romance 'lite' story about a time that - outside of Jacobite historians - knew about - well, me anyway. I didn't know Russia figured so prominently in Jacobite history - mostly as a refuge from England and Scotland. This theme is woven in a current story of a couple of psychics with a capability called psychometry. (Nic can see the history of things by touching them.) Interesting dynamics in the parallel story.

I'm glad I didn't write a review the first time I listened to it, since one cannot update or change a review - and honestly I do not remember much about the first listen.

The story is a continuation of "The Winter Sea" or now known as "Sophia's Secret" - which I remember enjoying a lot.

This is different, enjoyable, and worth the credit. I think I'm going to listen to "The Shadowy Horses" which sounds like it carries forward some characters in this story. More to come.
