The first body was found in Europe. She had once been a beautiful young girl, but with exquisite skill someone had carefully teased the skin entirely away from her body, leaving nothing but a flayed and bloody carcass. A full examination of her ruined body reveals an horrific truth: She had been skinned alive.
The second blood-raw corpse turned up in New England. Followed soon after by another, this time a victim of extreme decomposition, a mess of flesh convulsing with maggots. When a mysterious, crumbling painting is implicated in the deaths it seems that the investigating team has resorted to madness. But this rotten painting hides a terrifying family secret...

"Masterton is a crowd-pleaser, filling his pages with sparky, appealing dialogue and visceral grue" (Time Out)
"Graham Masterton is possibly horror's most consistent provider of chills" (Master of Chills)
"Though Masterton is capable of conjuring a spooky atmosphere and evoking chills from understated terrors, more often than not he goes for the gut, building to splattery climaxes of physical terror" (Publishers Weekly)
There are few things better than a good story well told!
A classic tale of horror with detailed descriptions of flaying. If you can get past that, the story is engaging, dripping with dark atmosphere and dread.
I am brutally honest. Popular, love everything they read, reviewers are scared to go neg. and risk their ranking. It's your money!!!
ONE SECOND OF TRUE LOVE IS WORTH FIVE YEARS OF FRIENDSHIP
GM knows how to build suspense. It can be the suspense of horror or sexual suspense. The very first chapter is kind of long, but it builds tension you could cut with a knife. One of the best beginnings to any book I have read. The climax is not disappointing. The story is good. I tried to read Oscar Wilde's, Picture of Dorian Gray, but could not get through it. I listened to all sixteen hours of this. The length did keep it from getting five stars and the séance crap was not something that interested me. I will read more of GM in the future if it is 12 hours or less.
"The Family Portrait"
This was a very gory story not for the faint hearted ! I loved this book it gets you hooked right from the start, a family that needs to feed on human flesh to keep the family tradition alive it is a brilliant story I loved this book from start to finish.
"very good and well written"
the narrator has a slightly monotonous voice but the story carries you along once it gets going. persevere with the slow start and you will not be disappointed.
"classic Eighties horror"
