Britain, early 10th century AD: a time of change. There are new raids by the Vikings from Ireland, and turmoil among the Saxons over the leadership of Mercia. A younger generation is taking over. Æthelred, the ruler of Mercia, is dying, leaving no legitimate heir. The West Saxons want their king, but Uhtred has long supported Athelflaed, sister to King Edward of Wessex and widow of Aethelred. Widely loved and respected, Athelflaed has all the makings of a leader - but can Saxon warriors ever accept a woman as their ruler? The stage is set for rivals to fight for the empty throne. In the end it is one champion, one hero, who will destroy the new Viking threat to Mercia - and ultimately decide the fate of England.

With this eighth entry in the epic Saxon Tales series, we are reminded once again why New York Times best-selling author Bernard Cornwell is "the most prolific and successful historical novelist in the world today" (Wall Street Journal).

Uhtred of Bebbanburg continues his epic life as he introduces coming generations to wisdom and power. Wounded, unable to fight in shield walls, he leads, guides and connives in continuing service to his higher vision. Action packed narrative introduces a new cast of characters in ongoing conflicts internal and external to proto-Engeland. Again this year I can't wait for the sequel.

Thank you Mr. Cornwell. I've read hundreds of books and many a series. ThIs series will likely be my all time favorite and has been a privilege to read. I'll be sad to see its end.
I enjoyed the original reader a great deal but Mr. Bates did a fine job.

Thank you Mr. Cornwell.

I like the way that Uhtred and Stiorra interact in this book. I really like Stiorra in it, and I like Sigtryggr. I like the way that they get together better than in the book. I also like the way that Uhtred controlled so much of what happened to do with Mercia compared to in the show. Still loving this series. I'm on to the next.

The differences are cool

so I will move to next book. I found this story of Uhtred in a weakened state more personal than in other books.
Also enjoyed his growing relationship with his son Uhtred.

Narrator did better this time

This pre-England story begins with the Mercian king near death without an undisputed heir to the throne. The kings wife Althelred, has been the warrior royal of the family. A young boy, thought to be an illegitimate son of the king might be legitimate. A ruthless lord is manipulating the ailing king to be declared the next king. The king of Wessex also seeks to influence the selection. On top of that, Uhtred minor be dying from a festering wound. Uhtred must rely on his experience and knowledge of warfare and the court to ensure a peaceful transition.

Cornwell’s stories of English history are very well researched and founded on historical events. They are always interesting and informative.
